Fancy memory seems a waste

Thats why I put my two 512MB Corsair Value sticks into my brothers PC and got myself two 1GB Hynix sticks from Sahara for like R1100...

I cant see the difference that its slower, didn't really need 2GB though, but better buy it now for the future when I get Vista and while DDR is still uber cheap..

The fancy memory is a waste if you a a gamer and that's all you are. An overclocker or enthusiast rather does not need any convincing that fancy ram is much better than generic stuff. So yeah thi ram is a waste of time for the averae joe, but for the score chaser its more times than not worth the price and fuss...

ie, I couldn't break 5K in 3DM06 with my generic V-data PC3500 ram @ 233MHz 2.5-3-3-7 even when paired with a 4400+ @ 2.99GHz. Changed to Samsung TCC5 at 281MHz 3-4-3-7 with a 4600+ @ only 2.81GHz and I instantly got over 5K. In Am3 (R.I.P) and 3DM01 the difference is even bigger sometimes in the order of 10K points between generic cheap ram and premium stuff...

That's why BH5/BH6 are still the most famous Dram chips ever... :) (Micron and TCC5/TCCD comin' in close though)

ROFLCOPTER ATTACK :D

I knew you were gonna post soon and I knew thats what you were going to say! Wanted to edit my post to say "...and now over to ShockG" but was too lazy :p

What you say is correct.

I agree it is a different story for overclockers. But I see many people pay lots of money for "Gold Edition blah blah" memory, with no plans to overclock, thinking they will somehow get better performance.

Yeah unfortunately many retailers will have fancy ram for sale, but know absolutely Zero about what they are saying or selling. ie buying DDR500 or DDRII 1066 when you are not going to overclock is much like buying a high end gx card to play 640x480 at 16-bit colour.

Some ram is really over the top however like the Geil DDR700 modules at 3-5-5-10. I mean really, who wants such poor timmings. DDR600 at 3-4-4-10 will be faster but you won't pay as much...

Oh! And BTW, Heatspreaders are more times than not a waste of time and money. my overclocks on the TCC5 were better when the sinks had been removed than when they were on :/
