Fanless VGA coolers?

Hi chaps,

In one of my more irresponsible moves I bought myself a Coolermaster HAF 932.

Great case, amazing cooling, just one thing left that is annoying me is my graphics card which sounds like it is on a test flight from king shaka airport.

I have tweaked the fan speed with riva tuner but in the end it is still a noisy little critter.

I have the xfx 8800GT with the zalman cooler on, cooler is not an issue, noise is.

Is a fanless VGA cooler an option? I was looking at this one:

The obvious question is, will this keep the card cool enough?

Link is not working. And the 8800 is known to be one hot son of a gun. Dont think that a fanless solution will work, unless the heatsink weighs at least 2kg

Hmm, maybe then I should be asking, what quieter cooling solution can I look at.
 
Ok, that may give you better cooling, but it is not meant to be used without a fan. You will however be able to buy a nice quiet fan to go on it, but it only supports 80/92 mm fans which have to be quiet loud to move enough air.
 
Was looking at the Zalman coolers, just need to know how noisy it will be as that is my ultimate goal. The Zalman that came with my 8800GT is like a jet plane.

I dont mind using a fan, just as long as its quiet.
 
TBH you're better off selling the card and putting the cash you would have spent on the cooler towards getting a 5750 or something. The cooler is going to cost pretty much the same price you could sell your 8800 for.

Anyhow, if you want to keep your 8800 I recommend a VF1000. Comes with fanmate 2 fan controller so you can run it at low noise/rpm in 2D and then when gaming or doing graphics intensive tasks you can crank up the fan speed.

You present a very valid point. Is the 5750 a decent step up
from the 8800gt? Also would it be as noisy.
 
Maybe not the 5750, but definately the 5770. 5850 and you're good for another year at least. And its nowhere near as noisy.
 
With modern GPU's passive cooling is really hard. A fan running at low RPM is close to inaudible, so that's what you need. I connected a fan controller to my GPU, which had a nice big heatsink, so when I'm using my desktop normally I turn it down, when I'm playing games I turn it up, but I don't mind as much due to the explosions etc. Kludgy fix but it works for me.

Yeah I couldn't imagine passive cooling working to well especially on the 8800 considering how hot they run.

I am not to concerned about noise, my case without the card runs pretty quiet, but when that 8800GT gets going dam its is annoyingly loud.
