.... on the elderly yes, it's a SA speciality. And specifically on this article and others when they appear, the same thing is said.
My great grandmother was tied, punched, kicked and stabbed and left for dead (and survived) at 85+ yo in France. I know of the grandparents of several friends living more or less through the same scenario.
The culprits were not South African, nor refugees, nor foreigners of any kind.
Sorry to disappoint you, but it isn’t a SA specialty. Barbary is very much widespread.

Here you can also find a gang who was using a young girl to seduce old guys in clubs, go back to their house and tortur/kill/rob then. This one is famous because the victims were high level but it happened rather frequently.
