Elderly Pretoria woman brutally hacked to death with axe

Famous businessman’s mother-in-law murdered while alone on farm.

An elderly woman has been hacked to death with an axe on Thursday evening on a farm just outside Pretoria.

Pretoria businessman Pierre Niemand told Rekord he received a call on Friday morning informing him that his mother-in-law, Marlene Brits (70), had been brutally murdered on Niemand’s farm on Thursday.

Niemand said Brits had been living alone with her dogs. “The foreman on the farm saw that a veld fire had broken out during the morning, and ran to the house. When he got there he found a hole in the electric fence, and saw that Marlene had been killed with an axe.”

Niemand said the murder seemed to be part of a robbery. The robber had stolen her cell phone, some cash and had attempted to steal her car. “My mother-in-law’s car had an anti-theft device built in, so he could only reverse a short distance before he abandoned the car.”

Niemand said police forensic units were on the scene to investigate and that they had arrested someone who had apparently confessed to the murder.

Niemand made national news headlines on 17 Mei 2012 when he and his son Vincent crashed in a light airplane west of Bronkhortspruit. The airplane crashed on a runway after hitting a power pole and a fence. Both survived the accident.

Police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo is yet to comment on the matter.

Police say three armed men entered the sugarcane farm in the area where they ambushed Peter and Ian Johnson before shooting them.
Peter died on the scene while Ian was rushed to hospital where he is still recovering after being shot in the face.
The suspects made off with two rifles belonging to the men.

The police's Jay Naicker says the suspects face charges of murder and attempted murder.

"A 42-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman are in custody. Detectives are still on the trail of outstanding suspects. This is a very crucial breakthrough that we've been waiting for and it's just a matter of time now that we arrest the outstanding suspects," he said

Woman, 94, attacked on KZN farm

2015-06-30 12:03

Jeff Wicks, News24

Durban - A 94-year-old woman was attacked on her farm on Monday by two men who stormed into her home, beating her with the butt of a pistol before quipping that there was nothing of value to steal.

Maggs Visser, who has lived on her farm in Upper Tongaat for decades, was injured in the attack, but declined to be taken to hospital.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) posted that their guards had been dispatched early on Monday to Visser’s home, which is in the middle of a sugarcane plantation.

“Upon arrival, officers found a visibly shaken elderly woman who stated that two men held up her domestic worker and her private security guard as they were about to enter the property and forced them into the home.”

“One suspect was armed with a revolver while his accomplice was in possession of an Okapi knife. The suspects began assaulting the elderly victim with the butt of the firearm, demanding cash and jewellery before ransacking the entire house in search of valuables,” Rusa posted.

“The victim further stated that when the suspects did not find anything of value they made a call from their cellphone to an unknown person and informed them that there were no valuables in the house before cutting the call. They then stole a duffel bag and keys to the property before fleeing on foot.

“The victim sustained cuts and bruises from the assault and was treated on scene by paramedics however she declined further medical attention,” Rusa said.

'Disgusting'

Farmer Steven Walder said that an attack on a frail and elderly woman was “disgusting”.

“I am very disappointed in the fact that this happened in our district and I have known her my whole life. Her late husband was a farm manager before the land was sold to the land claim. This is a very tight knit community and if something happens here it hits home a lot harder. It is like this happened to a family member. I have had three of these incidents that have affected me directly and it makes me really angry,” he said.

KZN Agricultural Union spokesperson Koos Marais said that an increase in farm attacks in the district was a cause for concern.

“There have been five incidents in the area alone this year. We call on farmers and landowners to take extra precautions as it is abundantly clear that these criminals will not stop at anything. If something is amiss at home, call for assistance. We repeat our calls to the police to increase visible patrols in these areas,” he said.

Three weeks ago a farmer from the same district, Ian Johnson, was killed in an ambush attack on his brother’s sugarcane farm at Nyoni.

Guess this story isn't being shared because the victims were the wrong colour?

Durban - Four men have been found guilty of the murder and robbery of a Winterton farmer and the sadistic torture of his wife.

In a lengthy judgment, acting Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Anand Maharaj on Tuesday found that the State had established beyond reasonable doubt the guilt of Sifiso Mabuza, 32, Lindelani Mtshali, 25, Sabelo Ndlovu, 32, and Mduduzi Nene, 37.

The men were convicted of the murder of Mohamed Engar, 67, as well as two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, the attempted murder of a farm employee as well as the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Two of their co-accused, Mbongeleni Nkabinde, 25, and Bongani Mazibuko, 27, were acquitted after Maharaj found that the State had proved no evidence against them.

Nice swift work:

A 36-year-old suspect was due to appear in a Free State court in connection with an attack on an elderly farmer couple in Vrede over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Constable Maselela Langa said the suspect would face charges including attempted murder following the attack on Sunday morning on the Brakdam farm in Vrede. over the weekend.

Police said: “On Sunday, two suspects allegedly awaited the victims Johannes (70) and Rita (68) Kritzenger when they returned from church. The two suspects were already inside the house as they had broken into the house earlier.

“They immediately fired shots at the couple and tied Mrs Kritzenger to the furniture in the dining room. They tortured the couple to be able to get access to the keys of the safe. Both victims sustained gunshot wounds during the process. The suspects fled the scene with a .38 revolver, a cellphone and cash.

“The police worked tirelessly after information was received regarding one suspect who had been an employee on the farm and suspect was arrested between 7-8 in the evening. Some of the stolen items were found in the suspect’s possession. The suspect will appear in court soon and one suspect is still at large.”

Midlands farmer assaulted, robbed by armed gang

2015-07-16 09:36
Jonathan Erasmus, The Witness

Pietermaritzburg - A Midlands farmer was beaten with a brick and then tied up with his shoelaces and tie as three knife-wielding men ransacked his home.

Eddie Freese, a farm manager and co-owner of a farm in the Dalton area, recalled lying under a blanket on his lounge floor as the balaclava-clad robbers rampaged through his home on Tuesday, looking for cash and guns.

Freese, who survived a horrific attack on the same farm 20 years ago, leaving him hospitalised for 15 weeks, said the attack would not force him out of his home.

“I am not physically injured except for a bruised nose, but it has certainly come with some mental strain. I will just have to carry on as normal. I don’t really have any other option. I have been here for 21 years,” he said.

The robbers, believed to be in their 20s, stole two cellphones, a wallet and Freese’s 2012 Ford Bantam bakkie, leaving behind electronics such as his music system and television. “They seemed more concerned about money than guns, and I don’t keep a firearm. They kept on asking where I kept the cash.”

Freese also believes it was a random attack and not an “inside job”.

“They tied up my ankles and hands, and then my hands to my knees. I was just returning from work and while waiting for the electric gate to open, they appeared out of the sugarcane, pulled me out and hit me in the face with a brick.

“I was then put in the back of the bakkie, which they drove to the house. They dragged me into the lounge, tied me up and threw a blanket over me. At one stage they said they wouldn’t kill me; they just wanted money.”

Moments after the assailants left, Freese set about untying himself before rushing off to the farm security office to report the incident. “My neighbours and the SAPS were great. The police processed the scene and found what they believed to be good sets of [finger] prints. I have faith that the police will make progress in the matter.”

Freese is part of the closely knit German community spread through the Dalton/Wartburg area, many of them second- or third-generation, who farm cane and timber.

Dalton Farmers Association chairperson Dieter Schulz said they seldom experienced farm robberies, recalling the last in the area to be about four years ago.

“We have a private security firm that patrols the farms and we meet with the Dalton SAPS, who we share a good relationship with, every week.

Very glad to hear they are okay! Were they staying at the cabin or the main house? I've been there a few times for parties, great hosts.

How many have you posted. Can you give us an indication of the real demographics?

How can he give you demographic stats when not even TAU give those? They always quote grand totals which includes farmers, workers and visitors.
