It's actually very interesting. Basically the Krauts wanted their lebensraum, and were a bit late to the colonial party. So they pitched up in SWA, wiped out the locals, kept a few around for hard labour, and were only kicked out after WW1....

That's the short version. Will try and find the name of the book I mentioned, and PM it to you.

86-year-old still in ICU seven days after farm robbery beating


An 86-year-old man is still fighting for his life in ICU seven days after a violent robbery in which a couple were burnt with a hot laundry iron on a farm outside of Kimberley in the Northern Cape.

Piet Els‚ 86‚ and Rikkie Alsemgeest‚ 66‚ were beaten with steel pipes and burnt after being woken in the early hours of the morning by four men.

Police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said on Wednesday that a 25-year-old suspect had been arrested and was expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

“The suspect was arrested on Monday at 6pm …. Jewellery that allegedly belonged to the couple was found in his possession‚” said Kock.

Two suspects arrested in faeces 'torture' case

The son and wife of a plot owner in Endicott near Springs have been arrested for allegedly forcing a man to drink faeces. Captain Johannes Ramphora confirmed the arrest on Friday morning.

“The son and the wife of the property owners were arrested yesterday. They are expected to appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court today‚” said Ramphora. A worker on the plot in Endicott was forced to drink about two litres of faeces before the alleged perpetrators tried to drown him in a septic tank on December 9.

I don't think he meant the difference between a small holding and a farm. I assume he meant that a farm attack is an attack directed at the farmer, his family or his workers by someone with the intent to steal or murder and not someone hitting someone else on a piece of farm land or small holding.

Rape charge added in Piet Els farm attack case

Kimberley - The State has added a charge of rape to the docket in the case involving the brutal attack on well-known businessman Piet Els and his partner on his farm outside Kimberley on January 23.

The couple were severely assaulted and burnt with an iron by a number of men, who later fled with firearms, jewellery, cash and cellphones.

They fled the scene in Els’ Mercedes Benz, which was later found abandoned next to the R31 road to Barkly West.

While a 25-year-old man appeared in court last Wednesday in connection with the robbery and attack, a second accused, Motlalentwe Qhantse, appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of housebreaking and robbery as well as rape.

During court proceedings, Qhantse continually put up his hand in an attempt to draw the attention of the magistrate.
