Bloemfontein - An 18-year-old farm worker was arrested for allegedly shooting at a farmer near Reddersburg, after she apparently confronted him for loitering instead of working, Free State police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mbambo said Heilie Labuschagne, 38, was preparing to go to Bloemfontein on Wednesday morning when she left her handbag and the car keys in her bakkie to fetch something from the house.

"As she was locking the back door, she was pushed back into the house by one of her employees, who was in possession of a firearm he stole from her bag."

Mbambo said the man apparently tried to shoot Labuschagne twice, but the firearm failed.

Shot at farm employee
Another employee, who saw what was happening, came to the woman's assistance but the attacker allegedly fired a shot in the helper's direction but missed.

Mbambo said the worker fled in Labuschagne's Ford Ranger and the police and neighbouring farmers were called to guard all exit routes.

Police said the fleeing man was apprehended about 10km from the scene by a neighbouring farmer. The firearm was found in his possession.

The man, who had worked on the farm for four months, was expected to appear in the Reddersburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of attempted murder, theft of a vehicle and theft of a firearm and ammunition

Dis reg maak die boere kwaad

And hopefully gets a couple of years in jail - with compliments of the tax payer... This dog should be shot - his intentions is clear enough

Lesson: never leave a weapon in an unlocked car. But then again, scum will be scum.

hows that, the gun failed to go off twice when he tried to shoot the woman but it went off when he tried to shoot another employee.

Ag shame, he must've been treated badly.

No wait, appears as though he was just lazy with the added potential to kill on a whim.

It must have had the safety on when he tried to shoot her and when the other worker came he managed to take the safety off ?

Probably forgot the safety was on and used every ounce of brain power in that single brain cell of his to figure out what that little switch on the side was. Stupid ****ing idiot, should just shoot him for being so dumb.

okay okay. lets just have this civil war and get it over with. i think some people in this country have forgotten what white people are capable of when they decide to get together for a good ol' asswhippin.

yes pity he did not look down the barrel to see why it would not fire?? :D

The bullet would intentionally miss out of pure spite. Life is torture enough for somebody this stupid, why ruin it!! ^_^

Hiring transients, is about the height of stupidity.

Farmers need to create an online register, to make sure that not a single person is hired without them going through all the checks and balances required for an employee in a high security industry.

A task team in each region must confirm previous employers/family visually and with documentation.

Photo's, fingerprints, mouth swabs for DNA samples, intensive history and references checks, visually, verbally and documented on paper, on PC and in the cloud.

+1

The farmer is also partly to be blamed for that - who leaves a firearm unattended? Isn't it law that your firearm be on your person at all times?

Unfortunately this will provide more ammunition to those who clamour that the farmer is supposed to look after his own safety. :(

I say - create a no-man's land around each farmstead, in which anything that moves will be shot, no matter what. Only way to be granted safe passage is to announce yourself at an intercom outside this no-man's land before entering.

Please tell me there will be automated tarot guns?

Best bet fire all staff and mechenise while bringing the bywooner system back turn every farm into a little Oranje and let the government take care of the poor mistreated workers

Someone recently mentioned in a thread here that these bywoners are the worst scum on the planet, and a whole bunch of people ecoed their sentiment giving experiences and stories as to why.

As to the no-mans land thing, I would disagree with it because once we were on a camp and a HUGE storm broke out while we were hiking/mountain climbing. The lightning was bad, the rivers came down in flash floods and it caused a lot of chaos. Some people ended up on a strange farm, and the rude farmer did the whole "This is my land, you speak my language!" to one of the Afrikaans chaps who said sorry in afrikaans to him...Oh the irony~!

ha ha ha you joke about looking down the barrel. my daughter had one of those little toy guns that shot plastic pellets and the thing has a laser site on it also. so anyway i am shooting this toy but cannot see the laser on the wall so i turn the gun around to look at the barrel and laser and i pull the trigger, thank goodness i had glasses on.
