An Mpumalanga farmer who fell into a manhole containing human faeces and condoms in 2009 is suing the Govan Mbeki municipality for R255,000, Beeld reported on Monday.
The newspaper reported that, according to a psychologist's report handed to the High Court in Pretoria, Hendrik Odendaal, 33, suffered mental trauma as a result of his ordeal.
Odendaal and a relative reportedly went to a pub in Lesley, Mpumalanga, on the night of February 20, 2009, to watch rugby, however the pavement was poorly lit and he fell into the uncovered manhole.
He reportedly swallowed dirty water and suffered lacerations to his arms in his struggle to get out.
According to Beeld, the psychologist found that Odendaal showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
The newspaper reported that the municipality, which denied that the manhole was uncovered, handed in revised court papers last week when the case was indefinitely postponed.
The municipality was reportedly ordered to pay wasted costs associated with the postponement.
