4mb line, 20GB cap, Telkom ISP. In the past, the speeds were great 24/7 but for the past 2 months it has become impossible to use the net between 6pm and 11pm. This mybroadband forum page took 15min to load!

My wife works from home and gets the expected speeds throughout the day. The problem only seems to crop up at night when the "load" increases.

In the recent survey, I gave Telkom top marks in all categories. I will gladly revise this should a new survey be run.

There is considerable work being done by Telkom in the area at the moment. Have you guys not seen the dozens of Telkom trucks around lately? They're laying fiber optics around Homestead and Atlas rd N12 freeway ramp. They're also upgrading MSANS or DSLAMS or whatever they're called around Farrarmere and Rynfield.

Not sure the timeframe on completion. Last Telkom techie I spoke to didn't know. Said he was maintenance so wasn't aware of the details. Just stop and ask one of them when you see them...

I believe that you have hit the problem on the head. Telkom finished laying the fibre lines in Crystal Park 3 months ago. The problem started 2 months ago. Would be interesting to know when they "hit the switch" to switch us over onto fibre and see if this matches the timelines.

The fiber is apparently a long term thing. The switch to 10Mb is coming first and that's supposedly happening soon...

MSAN has been installed in Farrarmere, but not live yet. Issue is that this congestion comes and goes, its fine for 3 weeks, then terrible for a week. Been sitting on bated breath for this upgrade since August last year, glad they are actually implementing these upgrades, just wish they would actually hurry up now as there is virtually zero activity at the trenches, MSAN's or anything in and around Farrarmere / Northmead. What concerns me is they are congesting the exchange with 2mbit and 1mbit connections with a few 4mbit's, i shudder at the thought of the congestion with a host of 10mbit connections running to that exchange... I hope they improve the backhaul sufficiently before they cut over to 10mbit.

The issue I have is that I am paying for a service I am not getting, on my 4mb line I am luck if I get 1mb d/load speeds with 450-650 ping to telkom.co.za

Telkom has know about the congestion for a loong time now, their excuses are wearing very thin, I think it is a real shame that due to the fact that there is no fixed line competition Telkom can do what they want and get away with it .... Shame on you Telkom
