Pooky go and download orbit downloader, then download again i can tell you by the time you download orbit install and start the new download your other download won't be finished.
LoL, let me put it to you this way, I am using my local account to download from Nvidia's site and always get 60kb/s on my WiMax connection (512k) and I use Free Download Manager.

Why are you downloading 178.24?? Those are quite old. I am using 180.48.

I just checked the nvidia site and it brings up 178.24 as the latest.

The 180's are now official, was there when I checked on Monday. Otherwise spend 40 bucks and get the latest PC Format, it has all 4 178.24 drivers on it, for all Windows systems.
Did you remove your old drivers correctly by uninstalling and the going into safemode and using something like drive sweeper.
I have been using beta's for 2 years and never had an issue with nvidia beta's. The only difference is that they haven't been tested by ms so they don't have the whql.

Free Download manager doesn't update every 2 days and also includes torrent support. It's the best one for me, but luckily we are all entitle to our own opinion.
