Hi guys,

Is anyone experiencing faster Capped Speeds on ADSL? Sunday 21 March 2004.
Since this afternoon, I can browse overseas sites at a faster speed. I’m not complaining. I just hope it isn’t a long weekend phenomena.
However downloads are still throttled.

It appears to work better when I open my favourites folder simultaneously with 21 local and overseas websites in tabs using Firefox.
It seems irratic at present. The browsing speed is not stable, but definitely faster.

Update. I opened an overseas site which has pictures I needed. It was about 100 odd pictures They flew in. Something is up as yesterday it took the whole afternoon to pull in about 20 pictures off the same site.

BTW, I cant reach Telkom's website.

Im still enjoying faster international browsing for the moment. Monday Evening at 11.30pm.
Not sure whats causing this phenomenon.

I have checked my Usage and this is the total this month so far:
TOTALS 968.26 MB 2679.302 MB 3647.562 MB
And at the top of the page is definitely written Capped.

The sites vary, but most are reasonably fast. Downloads are still throttled. I could at one stage update AVG last month when I was capped, but this month its dead. This I found very odd as last month, all International browsing was completely useless, but I could update AVG. So the opposite situation is happening this month. Addaware reference file is coming in at 3 or 4 kb, whereas it normally flies in.

Anyone else?

Update: Tuesday 23 March 2003 10.20am. Still the same. Just finished downloading SP2 RC1 (272Mb)from Microsoft in an hour and a half. Cetain overseas sites seem Ok. But not all. It is an odd situation.

That is great for ADSL users if that is the case.

What I am wondering is whether or not Telkom has implemented a Transparent Proxy on the local side of things[?]

Any other suggestions[?]

I had the same experiance back in january, great speeds etc even on p2p but it all dissapeared at the beggining of february.

afaik telkom implemented a transparent proxy a while back already.

Maybe they ran out of IPs to allocate to capped users.

My December period was brilliantly fast, I was capped yet experienced uncapped speeds for the entire month.

However, come January, etc. it reverted back to the extremely slow speeds.

Consider yourself lucky, next month may not be as good [:p]

Ok. It seems this is an oddity rather than the norm then. It just seems strange.

I launched Steam just now and it updated at full speed. So I just made sure and updated all the machines on the network while I can.
But other download sites like NVidia and numerous programs will not update at all.

Someone told me today that he had 1 gig stolen from his account and Telkom cannot tell him how it happened either. My point is, I would hate to be "stealing" someone else's bandwidth.

Later.

So long as Steam connects to the SAIX content server, it should update quickly even if you are capped.

I've just started dowloading Windows XP SP2 from microsoft site. It started of at 52k/sec but after 30MB of download it slowed down to 0.00001k/sec again. I've been capped since the weekend. Please explain???

You are capped. What can you expect.
My situation is an oddity as last month when I was capped I could do sweet fanny adam with my connection. It was slower than slow, it was non existant. So it must be the only explanation.

I know I'm capped since the weekend. But for some reason when I started the download just a couple of minutes ago, it started at 52k and then after 30mb it just shot down to 0kb.

I got a link off filemirrors this morning. I downloaded the file. It unzips, but wont install and comes up with an error written in German.
I will try another link, but I thought that was odd. But here is the link. http://www.filemirrors.com/
I also have an earlier SP2 beta version 2055 I have been using since XMas. Works fine.

Update. Wednesday 24 March 2004. I cannot download the service pack anymore. Tried late last night aswell. It tricles in at 1kb. 4Mb overnight. That was 30 minutes ago. Now all of a sudden its coming in again at full speed. Very odd.
My connection is very strange this month.

The latest build is 2096 and is much better than 2055. I extracted the download into my XP Service Pack 1a cd and then fresh installed. So I basically have a XP SP2 cd which allows you to have a clean installation of the OS. It seems to get rid of the 180 day beta trial period which you get when you download from Microsoft.
They are allowing general public to download now I see. I would think that they are just very busy now as this came out about last Wednesday and everybody is just catching on.
It is pretty good and when I checked the firewall, it came up tops with all ports appearing to act in stealth mode which is great when you are on the internet. Also love the pop-up blocker.

Hi George,

What link did you use as the one I downloaded off Filemirrors keeps giving me an error...in German.

Update. Wednesday Evening 8.00pm. Seems my little "uncapped" luxury has expired. I will keep you guys posted.

Send me an email with your address an I will send you the XP2 express installer. It is 0.98Mb in size. Once you execute, it will start the process and then hook you up to MSDN. The total download is about 278Mb. It didn't take long to download and will install automatically. It does give the option to uninstall if you want to get rid of it, in your ADD/REMOVE under CONTROL PANEL. Also it won't allow you to install over Build 2055, so you will have to uninstall that first in the same way. There is another site where you can download upgrade by itself, but I can't find it tonight, adsl is really screwy at the moment, it seems to be stop start the whole time.

Ok, I saw those links on this url ftp://download.hirekmedia.hu/

I will d/l the SP2 from their.
I also managed to find a nice link to d/l Mandrake Linux 10 which is coming in fast. I got the link from filemirrors and clicked all the mirrors until one worked.[:D]

Hi guys,

I downloaded 1 gig overnight on my capped connection.

2 files as follows:

File 1. xpsp2_RC1 -286MB ftp://download.hirekmedia.hu/xpsp2_RC1.exe
File 2. Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-Download-CD1.i586.iso -728MB
ftp://ftp.linux.org.tr/pub/mirrors/mandrake/iso/Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-Download-CD1.i586.iso

I started the files just before 12 and both files flipped out at 12.08am. Probably Telkom resetting the IP's perhaps. Cancelled those and restarted them and they came in fast. Both were finished by 5.33am. The Linux file came in much quicker and finished at 4.53am.

I have no idea if any of this info is of any use to anyone, but it is an indication IMO, that their might be hope for at least a few of us with ADSL. Also an indication to all how rediculous 3 gigs is. If you want big files like these, you can d/l 1gig in approx 5 hours. So certainly the member who stated that you can blow your 3 gigs in one day has merit.

Later.

Now that my adsl is working properly, it was really bad last night, here is the proper link for Xp Service pack 2, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2predl.mspx

The size is 273Mb. BTTB I am sure you downloaded previous version.
