It may be true that the accident rate may remain more or less the same if freeway speed limits were increased, but I would argue that the risk of physical trauma and death will likely increase with collisions at higher speeds.
I think the biggest issue we face in SA is the apparent lack of obeying rules of the road, lack of courtesy, and being impatient with others, especially on highways. The number of times per day I see people overtaking cars and trucks on the left, or the "road rage" of when a slower driver hasn't moved to the left and a car overtakes them to only pull in front of them to slam on brakes, or when drivers creep into lanes next to them because they are speaking on their phones, drinking coffee or eating lunch and not paying attention to whats in front of them. Its just insane!!!
The problem with all drivers including myself is that we feel that "everybody else is a bad driver, except me".
