Fastest internet package in Cape Town?

I am moving from Chicago to Cape Town and I am so overwhelmed with this decision. I have been reading the stickys in this forum but I have no idea what you guys are even talking about! The words I'm reading...capping latency unshaped shaped..are all Greek to me. I need the fastest internet connection I can get, I will be viewing mostly US websites, and I will be webcamming regularly with my family in Chicago via Skype. Please help!

hi assuming you won't be watching youtube all day long and downloading large files a standard 4mbps line with 3gig cap should be fine for you. That is of course assuming you are by yourself. you dont really need to worry about latency and shaped or unshaped looking at what you want to do. skype will work perfectly on the 4mbps connection, it even works on a 384kbps line without problems. the costs involved depends on the service provider you choose. currently the package would cost you a total of around 650 bucks a month(if you use cybersmart as ur service provider) which is about 80 dollars.

another option you can look at is the mobile broadband options from vodacom or mtn. the speeds are generally better with mtn where i stay in cape town(rondebosch) but it shouldnt make a difference for you. the speeds are 3.6mbps or 7.2mbps, both are faster than you need them to be although they will almost never reach the maximum stated speeds. a 2 gig package will set you back around 450 a month which is a little less than 60 dollars a month.

capping is when your internet access is suspended(or you start to get charged at a higher rate) because you have reached your monthly data limit, i.e 2gig or 3gig. this is something you probably have not heard of in the US on fixed line services but you will have heard of it on mobile packages.

It will simply cost you in bandwidth. That is, if you buy a "capped" package from an ISP. Go "uncapped, unshaped, 4mbps"

Skype has many security flaws. Do a "Google" for "skype security flaws". Then do "sightspeed security flaws".

As mentioned by purejimcm, above, capping is when you are conned into paying exorbitant rates for the amount of data that you transmit or recieve...at a rate of about $10 per 1000megs...
