Just curious what people think it is?

I saw a 335i and Jeep SRT8 line up the other night - and see many have as different idea of that outcome and what is the quickest.

I feel either a BMW X6M or Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

I feel the SRT8 is either 2nd or 3rd - depending on the length of track

I know that the SRT8 is the fastest on the straight, not a chance that the X6M or the Cayenne or even the ML63 AMG can beat that. On an actual track however, I am equally keen to see what happens. If i must be honest, the SRT8 is by far my fav extreme SUV but I think that the ML63 AMG may very well take the cup on the track :-) The X6M will be dead last imho, not just because i hate it but because its the heaviest..

The X6M should be about 2380 Kgs
The SRT should be about 2200 Kgs
The Cayenne should be about ??? Im guessing same-ish
The ML63 should be around 2100 Kgs

Anyways, im just saying that in this case the heaviest will probably lose.. weights like these render a lot of racing technology pointless.. well i think :-)

Fastest SUV on a dirt road, would be a Forester.

Erm... The X5 and X6 M have 95kW more power than the Jeep. They would rip it to shreds.

Personally I'd bet on the X5 M - 408kW is a serious number, and it won't be as useless around a track as an SUV is meant to be.

BMW X6 M
# Starting at a whopping $88,900 in 2010, the BMW X6 M stakes its claim to speed with 555 horsepower and zero to sixty in 4.3 seconds. According to Edmunds, this is the fastest SUV they've ever tested, with only the Porsche Cayenne coming close.
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
# Sleek and sporty, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S has been a mainstay in speedy SUVs for years, and this model's twin-turbocharged, 4.8 liter V8 engine packs 550 horsepower for a zero to 60 run of 4.4 seconds. At a starting price of $104,700, it's one of the most expensive SUVs on the market.
BMW X5 M
# Putting its "Ultimate Driving Machine" tagline to the test, the BMW X5 M comes equipped with a twin-turbo V-8 engine that generates an astounding 555 horsepower, which means zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds. In addition to quality and performance, BMW's zero maintenance program means you'll likely only ever have to pay for new tires.
Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG
# Combining luxury, speed and quality, the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG sports a 6.3 liter V8 engine and 503 horsepower, hitting 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. With a maximum speed of 155 mph, it's not quite as fast as the top-end SUVs, but for $91,000, it's fast enough.
Infiniti FX50 S
# Another luxury entrant, the Infiniti FX50 S is trying to lure BMW's clientele with a 390 horsepower SUV that goes from zero to 60 in five seconds. Not as supercharged as some of its competitors, but priced starting at $43,000, there's more bang for less bucks.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
# The fastest model Jeep makes, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 goes full-throttle with a 420 horsepower, 6.4 lilter Hemi V8 engine that streaks from zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Priced around $45,000, this is a less-expensive alternative to the luxury SUV brands.
Range Rover Sport 5 Supercharged
# A recognized brand for quality, Range Rover adds speed with the Sport 5 Supercharged, armed with a 510 horsepower, V8 engine that gets to 60 in 5.9 seconds. With luxury specs, however, comes a luxury starting price of $115,000.
Cadillac Escalade
# Offering ample cabin room, great storage space, attractive design and reliable performance, the Cadillac Escalade is not only the largest luxury SUV on the road but one of the fastest. It hits zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds and comes with a 6.2 liter V8 engine that cranks 403 horsepower, a behemoth that moves like the wind.
Chevy Trailblazer SS
# The Chevy Trailblazer SS is durable enough to double as a great family car, but with a 6.0-liter, 395-horsepower V-8 engine, comparable to that of a Corvette, this SUV will hit 60 in 6.3 seconds and still give you great control of the road. With a starting cost under $40,000, you'll get near-luxury value at a reasonable price.
Brabus GLK V12
# Manufactured by Mercedes-Benz, the Brabus GLK V12 is the world's fastest SUV, hitting a top-end speed of 200 mph. It's listed last because it's not available to the public, only by special order. With a roaring turbo V12, 750 horsepower engine, this boxy SUV hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, about the same as the BMW X6 M, but nothing can touch its maximum speed, and at $580,000, it's also the world's most expensive SUV.

Driven in the ML63 AMG...
Power delivery off the line lets the poor thing down... but that's always an issue with Mercs.
On paper, it sounds impressive. 6.2 Liter V8... but it doesn't get off the mark as fast it should.

Heard on Top Gear that the sport X5 (SM X5) is now the "Most Powerful" SUV... but I dunno if it'll nuke a Cayenne or an SRT8 in a drag race. Even Clarkeson says that it corners pretty well for being so high of the ground... so that'll probably be the one to win on a track.
(Top Gear Season 14 Episode 4)

It's a hard one to call... and they're probably all within a tenth or two.

There are other contenders too...
The Q7 has a 6 liter twin turbo V12 diesel coming out (Same episode of Top Gear) that's as fast as the Beamer 0 - 100km/h.
Dodge Ram SRT10 (but that might be considered a LDV - it's a double cab with the Viper SRT10 engine)

+1

Jeep SRT8 was once the fastest... then came the ML63, then came the X5 and X6 M

my vote goes to the X5 M

There's a rob green supercharger conversion for the jeep srt8... wouldn't mind that. I think it's the best looking out of the 4 cars in post 2.

The new Cayenne's 200kg lighter than the previous one. My vote (at least around a track, for sure) is a new Cayenne Turbo.

I'm always a little scared when I read things on the motoring section of this site. Talk about pulling facts out of.... thin air.

Brawler had some nice info so I thought I would ad some more. This is from Sport Auto. All four were tested on the same day. It's between BMW X6M, Audi Q7 V12 TDI, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the Mercedes-Benz ML63. The Porsche is the outoing S model and not the new lighter one.

Test - Audi - BMW - Merc - Cayenne
Weight - 2706 kg - 2343 kg - 2358 kg - 2478 kg
0-100km/h - 5.8 - 4.7 - 5.2 - 5.0
0-200km/h - 20.4 - 16.3 - 19.4 - 16.9
Hockenheim, kleiner Kurs - 1.20,1 - 1.17,1 - 1.18,9 - 1.16,7
18m Slalom - 60,2 km/h - 65,2 km/h - 59,1 km/h - 63,6 km/h

Odd that the Beemer is lighter, quicker to both benchmarks, more powerful and faster through the slalom than the Cayenne, but slower around their circuit. Doesn't make too much sense to me...

The power of the two are almost identical but the porsche has a lot more torque.

BMW - 408kW - 680Nm
Porsche - 405kW - 750Nm
The Porsche is also a bit better on the brakes from 100-0. 36.7m vs 37.3m
Tyre dimensions are also different. 275/40 R 20 - 315/35 R 20 (Bridgestone Dueler HP Sport) for the BMW and 295/35 R 21 (Michelin Latitude Sport) for the Porsche.

Anyone else think that the whole notion of the "fastest SUV" is a tad silly tho?

Yip. In the old days, we called a utility vehicle a bakkie. A bakkie with fat takkies and racing stripes was then sporty ;)
