Speed is largely dependant on your hardware. Try handbrake or Xilisoft converter.

If you have a graphics card some applications use the hardware to speed up the encoding process... Also the latest Intel chipset has an encoder that is meant to be significantly faster. So it largely depends on what system you have already to recommend the best encoding tool for you. I use Any Video Converter or Handbrake myself.

I used Freemake a few weeks ago. It's free and does quite a few formats. http://download.cnet.com/Freemake-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-75218346.html . The brill thing is you set your videos to convert...start it and it will batch everything for you.

I suggest you install .net framework 4 in advance, but if you don't it will try and download and install it for you.
