fastjet to keep Joburg-Dar costs low

Johannesburg - Following the announcement that it had received its Foreign Operator Permit from the Department of Transport, fastjet is confident that sales for its Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg route will open soon.

Tourism Update reports that Ed Winter, CEO of fastjet said: "We expect this to be a particularly popular route, due to the fact that South African Airways has had a monopoly on this route for far too long. We are very keen to offer substantially more affordable fares to customers and further stimulate the potential traffic between these two key African cities, which can only have a very positive effect on the critical trade, commercial and tourism industries between South Africa and Tanzania."

The budget airline has also committed to "substantially more affordable fares" for travel between South Africa and Tanzania, after receiving regulatory approval to operate services on the route last week.

Schedules are yet to be announced but Chief Executive Officer, Ed Winter, was optimistic demand would be strong, due to fastjet's promised deep-discount fares.

fastjet launches first international flight

African low-cost carrier fastjet has announced tickets for its first international route, between Tanzania and South Africa will go on sale this week.
Flights from fastjet’s hub in Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg will be available to purchase from tomorrow, with fares from USD$100 (plus government taxes and charges).
Initially, flights on the route will operate three times a week and the first flight is scheduled for September 27th.

However, as demand for seats on fastjet’s signature Airbus A319s is expected to be high, the Company intends to increase the frequency of flights in line with market demand.
The airline expects to add further international destinations including Lusaka, Zambia, to its flying program in the near future.

Commenting on today’s news, fastjet chief executive Ed Winter said: “This is a hugely important day for fastjet and the people of Tanzania and we are delighted to have reached this significant milestone in our history.
“Despite a number of challenges, fastjet is now able to respond to huge consumer demand and provide an alternative and affordable link between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg, having secured all required permissions to do so.
“For far too long it has been difficult and prohibitively expensive to fly between these two extraordinary cities.
“We expect our lower fares to stimulate a huge increase in the numbers of passengers travelling on this route, as has been the case on our domestic routes in Tanzania.”
