Fault at exchange

So I've been without adsl since Monday. Took them four days to come up and look, then the guy says he can't fix it. That the port at the exchange is faulty and there isn't a free one to assign to me. He has to refer it to A&E, whoever that is. Anyone else had this kind of thing before? Getting some kind of time frame from them is impossible, and I'm wondering how long this might take to fix.
