My parents CD-RW/DVD Combo is giving me a hell of a time. All it does the whole time is open and close by itself which they say is quite irritating for them. What can the fault me, maybe just the cable?

Ps, I don't know what make it is.:p

Any idea how old it is? Sometimes you just have to accept that a things busted and let it go especially if it's a bit on the old side. If it's still new than it might still be under a warranty and you can take it in. These days the combo drives aren't that expensive, with the right contacts you can get a good one for less than R300.

Ag it's just over a year old. I have another one at home I can put it but I am very finicky. If something is broke, I wanna know why it's broke:D And besides, do you know how much work it is to open up the box, take the one out, put the other one in and then all the effort of closing the box again. Sheesh:eek:

Forgive me, but the "opening and closing by itself" could be an indicator of a spirit, trying to make contact from "the other side"

Alternatively, it could just be stuffed! :D

This is going to sound strange: do a virus scan.

I know there was a virus/malware a couple of years ago that would randomly open and close the CD-ROM drive on Windows computers. Can't remember the name of the virus though...

virus?? mmm

it wouldnt happen to be a samsung drive, would it?

both my liteon dvd writer and gigabyte combo drive do that

i open and they close but only sometimes its annoying but not annoying enough to take it back to rectron

the eject button could also be stuck. that would cause it to open and close repeatedly.
dont overlook the obvious. boot from a boot floppy, if the drive still opens and closes then it boviously isnt a virus, you have now eliminated a software problem so go search for your hardware problem

Werner but some good points up, could be something stuck inside, sometimes small children put coins and stuff into PCs

When the PC boots - hold DEL till the BIOS config menu comes up.
If it goes into windows, wait - and then login and then reboot and this time hold F2 to enter the BIOS menu.

Leave it in the BIOS menu for about 4 hours and see if the damn tray does it's thing. If it does not, then it's definately some SW on the PC doing that. Possibly a friendly casper the ghost virus...

If it does it while in the BIOS menu - go and buy a new one and send the old one to the manufacturers along with a "I demand an explanation" letter.
