Faulty item from Makro

I'll concede that such an argument can be made, but where items are obviously broken or defective I wouldn't stand for it. Further, to already pave the way to the customer accepting a voucher instead of a refund is just taking the mickey.

Indeed, a little bit of common sense from the person taking the faulty item would go a long way :)

Necro I know but need to vent somewhere:

Two nights ago, on the way home from friends in Midrand, I decide to pop in at Makro Centurion to buy some power tools. While I wasn't looking one of those Verimark sales people convinces my wife that the Genesis vacuum is the Alpha and Omega of all things sucky (and blowy apparently). Before I could say Verimark = poo poo, she had bought the thing.

Last night I come home to upset wife who had tried using said Verimark poo poo. A flexible pipe had broken at the connection point into a fixed pipe.

Fast forward to this morning where I take a drive to Makro Wonderboom to return the thing.

They call the Verimark guy on-site and the first thing he does is to try BS me: "That's the way it works, its fine, it will just screw in". Que twenty minutes of this guy trying to get the flexible pipe to stay inside the fixed pipe. Eventually I start to lose it with him as its obviously broken. He calls his supervisor who takes one look at the thing and offers and exchange. Except I don't want an exchange, I want my money back.

"We can't take a Verimark product from another store, only the Verimark guys from the store you bought it from can verify whether a refund can be given" :wtf:

Wanted to shove that pipe where the sun don't shine. Ended up with one of the Makro store managers stepping in as I was ready to less than polite with the idiot but still have to take a drive out of my way to Centurion.

I have to note that throughout this little exchange the Makro people were nothing but polite and helpful. The Verimark sales guy was an outright liar with the supervisor extremely rude and bordering on losing some teeth.

/rant

tl;dr: Verimark is ***, don't buy.

My enamelled cast iron griddle pan would like to differ...

It's likely heavily branch dependent, but I've not had an issue with the 2 or 3 items I've needed to exchange since the CPA came into effect.

Its also noise dependant .... go in with a defiant EFF type attitude and dose of JZ arrogance and you usually win IMHO

Just post it on twitter @ verimark...companies these days don't give a fk unless you very publicly light a fire under their arse....

On the topic of Makro, be careful with the Ottery branch. They tend to just put roken stuff that has been returned straight back on the shelf. I bought my kid a BMX from them which the previous buyer had obviously failed to assemble, broken horribly and put back in the box. Always look inside the box and make sure it hasn't been opened before.

How? Because you'd be looking in the box (technically open it), so the next person comes along, it's already opened... sooo...? :D

And then a complete 180 at Makro Centurion. Verimark guy was totally apologetic on the failure of their quality product, offered a replacement, requested a refund instead. 5 minutes later I had cash in hand. He was going on his break and offered to buy me a coffee as way of apology. Still think that Verimark is *** but at leas the sales guy at Centurion redeemed the brand a little.

Yeah, def think it all boils down to the person you're dealing with.

I've never had an issue with the Makro's I've dealt with in the Durban area.

I bought the Genesis vacuum the same guy 2 days ago, but it worked fine.

The TiVo reps are just as bad. They flatly refused to take back a vacuum cleaner I was returning within 7 days until the manager from Game stepped in and told me to just clean the filters and bring it in. These reps from Verimark and Tivo are desperate to make a sale but they don't care about the customer once it's returns and warrranty time.

Section 56(2):

Within six months after the delivery of any goods to a consumer, the consumer
may return the goods to the supplier, without penalty and at the supplier’s risk and
expense, if the goods fail to satisfy the requirements and standards contemplated in
section 55, and the supplier must, at the direction of the consumer, either—
(a) repair or replace the failed, unsafe or defective goods; or
(b) refund to the consumer the price paid by the consumer, for the goods.

Sorry to hijack.

If this an issue was brought up in the 6 months but a delay on the suppliers side takes this to 8 months, they'd still offer a refund?

Reason I bought a TV at less than the retail from Dion Wired and after a few months noticed a dead pixel. Samsung said they'd replace and I shouldn't worry - but came back a few weeks later and said they can't get parts and they'll authorise a credit. Great - but the credit is obvviously what I paid and I can't get the same set again at the price... meaning I downgrade my T.

This issue is bouncing between everyone - but my 6 months is end of this month,

Hey guys,

Also sorry to hijack but its along the same lines... We're doing a kitchen revamp project for a client currently out of the country. The client purchased a hob from Makro in Amanzimtoti in June, and stored it in a safe location on site, unopened.

Granite went on in the past week, and the hob box was opened for the first time. There was a whole bunch of shattered plastic pieces in one of the styrofoam grooves, and upon searching we found that nearly all of the screw stands were broken and the screws falling out - rendering us unable to install the hob. There's no way to fix it as these things are factory moulded.

Since then we've been in a 3-way tussle between Makro and Whirlpool, with photos and emails and phone calls, technicians coming to site (and acknowledging such damage was from factory).... yet both Makro & Whirlpool have had the audacity to state that "our policy is that the customer has 7 working days to check the items in question, after which no returns will be accepted"?!!

From what I read, this flouts the CPA Part H, Section 56 no end. Who can we go to about this?

oh, and for extra laughs... the client had even purchased an extended warranty on the item!
