my daughters one has the same glitch and only does it after a while of running ,sometimes ages like 3 hours .she says sometimes it went the whole day without issues .they old machines now ,replaced hers with a new unit ,to replace the motherboard is not worth it .even reflowed the gpu chip ,didnt help .

This...

or just slightly loose. Same fault you'l see on tv's with loose and/or faulty cable

I have fixed problems like these with HP and DELL laptops.
People don't look after their computers and drop them. But will deny it like the ANC denies stealing.
The FFC connector to the LCD panel pops loose and then the fingers don't make proper contact

The most I did was remove and reconnect that screen cable. The plan was to buy a new screen, but not anytime soon.

It my sister's laptop and I wouldn't put it past her to have done that. She's been transporting it to work and I can just see her carelessly putting down her laptop bag and shaking about the laptop. I'll look into the connector again.

Common on these Dells. Replace the LCD with a donor. Easy to do and it’ll probably set you back R500 - R800.

Where does one find these donors? You make it sound like a straightforward process.

Windows laptop screens are very standardised. Basically only a handful of versions. 30-pin, 40-pin, slim or not, and then connector positions. Remove the bezel of your Dell, unscrew and disconnect the LCD, Google the part number or look at the amount of pins and position of the connector. Yours being an older Dell will be 14” non-slim, for starters. Then check Marketplace, BoB, etc. for a replacement. You can probably even find a FHD LCD if your current is HD.

A relative new Dell laptop touchscreen started hair cracking slightly, noticed. You see it only if reflections at certain angles. Phoned around, no satisfactory answers.
So before it cracked to pieces, I glued a stainless plate at rear of screen to stabalise it prevent any bending of lid. I then had a 4mm glass cut size of screen and glued sides over current screen. No touchscreen(which I dont use in any case), however laptop saved. Its heavy now stand in one spot, wont haircrack further and works perfect.
Dell, you wont force money out of me before I decide so, there are ways around new crap.
To prove how easy a touchscreen haircracks, I took old Mecer I7 failed morherboard laptop touch screen and start pressing on it, boy was I surprised at how flimsy this manufacturing of screens were, it dont take much.

I just a hope a screen replacement will do.
dont just replace the screen the gpu fault is common on lenovo ,hp ,and dell .the screen connection cant just come loose on a dell as they are double taped and that never comes loose on them ,plug in a second screen and see if it also does it ,the cables are cheap like R150 ,but very seldom break .take the surround off the screen, finger nails only it just unclips .you may have to also dislodge the hinge covers ,the surrounding just lifts off when the screen is at 90degrees ,they unclip upwards ,the screen usually has 4 small black screws holding it down loosen them flip the screen down onto a cloth ,you will then get the info off the sticker .you can also then loosen the connection tape .plug it out and push it in a few times as well ,with the battery out when you done put insulation tape over the old tape to keep it in place ,but once again in many years of doing repairs ive never seen a connector pop off on its own .and just be warned you will probably never get the hinge cover back inplace again.edit most dells have samsung screens ,very reliable
