What is a suitable fax recieving software system for a SME size operation? Something that would be good for handling about 50 faxes a day.

Fax to email

I use a fax to email number which sends the fax directly to my email box.
Fax comes through within 2 minutes of being sent.

This way each person can have their own faxes sent to their email.
Its free to receive and has a pre-paid facility to fax from the computer to.

The canonical example in this category is HylaFAX, about which:

HylaFAX is an enterprise-class system for sending and receiving facsimiles as well as for sending alpha-numeric pages. The software is designed around a client-server architecture. Fax modems may reside on a single machine on a network and clients can submit an outbound job from any other machine on the network. Client software is designed to be lightweight and easy to port. HylaFAX is designed to be very robust and reliable. The fax server is designed to guard against unexpected failures in the software, in the configuration, in the hardware and in general use. HylaFAX can support multiple modems and a heavy traffic load.

If you expect to send more than a few facsimiles a day, then HylaFAX is the fax package for you!"

Thing is, that takes setting up a dedicated box (nothing wrong with dedicating a machine to the task), but it also takes setting up a Linux system and that may be problematic if you're a n00b! (btw, I've got a plan to install one of these myself, haven't gotten to it yet) :o

But you CAN, as an interim step of indeterminable length, just set up an XP box to receive faxes anyway ..which is what I've done. It's a piece of old tackie to setup, works pretty damn well and all you need do is set the thing to, say, answer on 3 rings with an actual fax machine on the same line to answer on 5 (again, how I've got it running). Then share the incoming faxes folder to the network and no-one even need BE there to do anything at the box.

It's a kludge but you can't knock it if it works! :D

At the moment they are using the Fax Console included in Windows XP, but it seems to be problematic because it frequently cuts off recieved faxes, mostly at the same point if they are resent.

Fax to mail wont work because the faxes must be centralised and not sent to individuals.

Cant use lunix cause the pc also runs our biometric time log in system.

Dang! Can't suggest much else here, ours gets faxes all day long, not sure on daily volume though...

Dredge up some old machine for the task!
