I have no idea how they keep calling me and know my personal details but I keep getting annoying phone calls from mtn, vodacom, cell c and now 8ta offering me contracts. And i try to politely tell them im not interested but the try and force the issue. Im getting fed up with these calls. If i wanted a contract i would go to a shop and take one out.

i know a guy who is so tired with these sorts of calls that he just hangs up on them immediately.
No politeness, no "Sorry I'm not interested", no getting angry, nothing .... All he hears is "I'm calling you from Voda/MTN/CellC/Nedbank/OldMutual" and the next thing they hear is just beep-beep-beeep.
Classic!

Naa you should rank these callers :) Using a simple equi-oppertunity scale - this is what I do :
Answer call - oki so it is a sales call - say you'll be right back .. and then hit HOLD on your phone....

Now wait to see how long the person is willing to hold on for. I think I got to 2 minutes with some insurance-comparison dude before he hung up and then he called again and I put him on hold again ..

ps. works GREAT for those persistent wrong numbers when you just can't convince them that David/Sam/Saul/Mary/Judy etc is NOT here.

Thing is... you can't blame the poor guy/girl trying to work a cr@p job... you blame the companies that employs people to do this s**t.
Many many years ago when my brother was just out of school and couldn't find a job, he found himself working in one of these call centers. Was super crap. He gave up after 1 month.
So my 2c would be to take it easy on the people ... they're just people.
Now if there was a way to get back at those companies... that's where the real fun is.

This is very true.

I think singing to them is funny :D at least it can (hopefully) put a smile on their face and also save you from having to listen to their sales pitch about a product you don't really want.

i went through all the stages:

politeness - "yes? no thanks, i don't need it"

apologetic - "sorry, i can't afford it"

rude - *hangs up after hearing pitch*

angry - "STOP F*****G CALLING ME ABOUT F*****G THINGS I DON'T F*****G NEED"

annoyed - "can i please be removed from your database? let me speak to your manager"

after going to some opt-out site, it has decreased a lot. worked better than all my other ideas. :)

No, you should absolutely be as nasty as you can to those people and make it hell for them. I know it's nasty, but this literally raises the cost (as it increases staff turnover and HR costs) and thus REDUCES the reward/incentive of a telemarketing / cold calling approach. By being nice and police to those people, you actually INCREASE the incentive to use a cold calling approach by deliberately lowering the operating costs of the cold calling center.

If you are nice and polite, they may also just put you on a 'call again, more likely to buy something' list. If you are consistently rude, maybe they'll get smart and put your number on a 'waste of time, don't call' list. Or maybe that's optimistic.

I understand your point.
Thing is... Trying to be nasty to them will only get you aggravated and raise your blood pressure :)
Someone once told me "When you get angry, you only harm yourself"
I get your point, and it's a strategy worth taking a shot at. I just wouldn't do it myself. Like i said... those people just work there... most of them don't give a cr@p what you say to them. They probably have developed a tolerance for it anyway.
But hey... to each his own. Good luck with your strategy.
