Fedora 18 is Out

Can't say yet since it is still downloading. The full list of features is at <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/18/FeatureList>, which seem aimed mainly at developers and system admins. Reports I saw on the beta version said that it seems to run fast.

Hope I can install this one last one didn't want to install at all had to go back good old Ubuntu 10.10

Well, for one GNOME has been updated to 3.6; GDM and new themes look pretty impressive.

There was some issue about a memory leak in Gnome 3.6. Haven't had much time to sit and find out if it was resolved. When 18 was released, the only upgrade option was using FedUp... not sure if it is still the only upgrade option (will have to look when at home), but I remember going through the issues list for FedUp and a couple of things made me cringe...

Hopefully all is good and I can busy myself with the upgrade over the weekend...

Spent the weekend playing with the various install / upgrade options and was initially despondent to find the Gnome Frippary bottom panel labelled as obsolete forcing me to use the simple top panel workspace switcher which severely impacts my productivity. This morning, to my delight, I find that Tigress have released the F18 versions of their Frippary extensions to https://extensions.gnome.org/ and the bottom panel is back.

A F18 version of EasyLife was not available at time of writing hopefully this will be released shortly (if you're performing an update this shouldn’t be a problem if you had performed the EasyLife setup under F17)

It's worth reading up on the new "fedup" version updater to understand the various options.

I was unable to perform a grub based dual boot F18 new install on a WinXp system (32 & 64bit tested), problem seems to be UEFI related and I'll investigate further when time permits. No problems were experienced updating existing dual boot systems.

Still using F17 on my main systems but will play with F18 on the side, currently I haven't experienced any problems and "fedup" works superbly for me.

Edit: unetbootin seems to have problems with F18 ATM rather go the dd route:
Code:
[root@mick1 Fedora-18-x86_64-DVD]# dd if=Fedora-18-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdh bs=8M

MPEG video decoder

If you get a "MPEG video decoder not found" message on F18 after installing the extra repos/codecs with EasyLife/fedorautils:

Code:
yum install gstreamer1-libav

... will get you going.
