The reason behind a podcamp is to get thinkers and entrepreneurs together and allow the convergence of technology and discussions around it to inspire new ideas and challenge current standards. PodcampSA Bloem was no exception. If you missed it, let me scribble down a few of the more sparkling issues raised.

Podcasting in South Africa needs a serious kick in the pants. The culprits? Business owners who still think they are on the cutting edge of technology because they can receive an MMS on their cellphone. We have a long way to go in understanding how to exploit podcasts, blogs, online media and the plethora of new possibilities that the Mosaic Generation is looking for. Business will be forced to completely overhaul their marketing approach as the Mosaics start outnumbering the technologically challenged older generation.

One area of convergence technology that has not only been overlooked, but attempts at getting it right have proven more embarrassing than anything else is media convergence in popular newsrooms. One has to wonder just how old the people are who are working on integrating video footage, news bulletins, video podcast and the like into their online presence. I can understand how the older generation might marvel at being able to watch a video-clip online instead of waiting for the 7 o’clock news, but the quality, relevance, impact and originality of what seems to be mindlessly dumped onto news websites is insulting at best. We’re a global community. We know what the best in the world are delivering, and we want nothing less.

Lastly, those presenting even tackled our power crisis! The best idea that came forward was to gather communities together and allow neighbours to monitor each other. If as a neighbourhood you are able to cut consumption by 10% then their’s no power shedding. Also, a suggestion was made to spam the neighbourhood with an sms when power consumption was too high. I don’t know about you, but i would much rather know that by switching off a few lights I could keep watching TV than being nuked without being able to prevent it.
