This women lost her match because the clock got stuck and her opponent got her "winning" touch only after the time had run out.

And then the German had the cheek to boisterously celebrate her victory even though she knew it was invalid.

What a complex sport;

Heidemann advanced to the final after a controversial win over South Korea's Shin A-Lam in the semifinal, which also went to extra time.

Per the rules of fencing, one fencer is randomly selected to have the advantage going into one minute of extra time. Shin got the lucky end of the stick, and would be the winner if there was no point scored between either competitor.

Several double hits were recorded in the final minute, which occur when both fencers register a hit at the same time. One second remained on the clock when Heidemann scored the decisive stroke and won the duel. But a long discussion among fencing officials ensued to decide if she had actually landed the final point within one second.

I would disagree, she did not rub it in her face, she was actually hesitant about the whole deal, composed herself, congratulated the Korean and then only celebrated. The officials say I go through to the Olympic finals, why not celebrate? Even after a 30 minute review the decision was upheld, unfortunate, but that is live.

The Korean had a penalty against her which is why she would have lost anyway. They dodged a very big bullet with this one because there was about 5 seconds before the bell went, so to speak, despite there only being 1 second on the clock. Had the penalty not been there, I can just imagine what would have happened.

Nothing wrong with the decision once you understand what went on. Not sure of the terminology (they use weird words ) but the korean had priority in the final minute but then got an infraction, with the infraction in place she would not have been able to score and it would have stayed at 5-5. Due to the infraction(?) the clock was reset. The german scored in the last second to go 6-5.

She did no celebrate until the panel/judges deliberated and stood by the referee awarding the point. During this period she was composed and well behaved. The korean did not accept this and remained on the pieste(?)/court because leaving in the rules of the game means accepting the decision. the coach then filed a written appeal but the decision was upheld by the FIE (International Fencing Federation). After this she had to leave the pieste(?)/court else she would have been black carded.

I blame the commentators & officials for creating confusion as to what was going on and not explaining the rules.

This just happens to be the first bit of the olympics I have watched so far, I'd just got back from KFC with my soft serve cup and plonked my ass down on the couch and this game was in progress
