Sir Alex Ferguson insists he wants Carlos Tevez to stay at Old Trafford after the Argentinian scored the first goal in Manchester United's 2-1 win at Wigan tonight.

Tevez equalised with an impudent back-heel after Hugo Rodallega had given the Latics a first-half lead before Michael Carrick scored an 87th-minute winner to leave United only a point away from retaining their Barclays Premier League title.

Tevez's future has been in the spotlight over the past few days, with the former West Ham player quoted in a Sunday newspaper saying he does not expect to stay at the champions.

However, following tonight's victory at the JJB Stadium, Ferguson told Sky Sports 1: "He is a fantastic player.

"He knows I want him to stay. I had a chat with him today and (chief executive) David Gill has had meetings with him.

"I'm sorry I have to keep on going on about this, it has never changed.

"(The fact) we're not negotiating with a football club is the problem - we'll see."

Yep I was right United's stance on players with agents already rocky now Tevez belongs to a football club makes it even worse...

but Tevez will be at united next season ;)

I still think he and Ronaldo will stay...

I woudln't mind losing Ronaldo to be honest. Everyone can be replaced. Like when Cantona quit, and when Beckham left....and Keane....and RVN.....

Tevez rejects £40million offer from Real Madrid

A formal offer for Carlos Tevez of £40million from Real Madrid has been rejected by the player. It proves how determined he is to stay in the Barclays Premier League.

Last night, his owner Kia Joorabchian told Sportsmail: ‘Carlos will decide on his future. Carlos Tevez will decide where Carlos Tevez will play.’

Joorabchian added: ‘This is not about money, it’s about where Carlos wants to play and his family. To turn down the chance of progressing talks of this nature shows this.’

The Champions League final against Barcelona in Rome is likely to be Tevez’s Manchester United swansong. The club are eager to continue talks on signing him but agreed a contract for his price back in 2007.

It is understood that United have broached the idea of lowering the fee but that has been rejected by the Tevez camp and Joorabchian refuses to enter talks on the price.

United signed former West Ham striker Tevez, 25, in a £9m loan deal. The contract included clauses which stated his final transfer price would rise by £25m, a combined fee of £34m.

Joorabchian, who was heading for Manchester last night, held talks with United deal-maker David Gill on Tuesday. Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are interested in Tevez.
