Hi all
I have a 4mb line and I'm seeking advice. I'm sharing the 4mb line with a flatmate and both of us play Guild wars as well as COD4.

What I want to know is which ISP will be the best suited for my needs? I'm thinking of getting 2 accounts. One local (for COD4 and some local downloads) and one for international (for Guild Wars and everything else).

How does the telkom local uncapped thing work? Is it really uncapped?

Also, how much will my latency drop when I go from shaped to unshaped? I'm getting around 350-500ms in Guildwars using a shaped axxess prepaid account.

Any answers will be appreciated :)

From what I've read Telkom accounts are not uncapped. If you get a 1Gig account, you get 10Gig local, 2 Gig you get 20Gig local. When you go over those limits Telkom will charge you R25,00 per gig for local access, no international access. At least that is what I think it is. Check the Telkom site.

An unshaped account should see you get a reasonably stable 200 to 300ms ping, depending on the server, and where it is. The big difference for m between unshaped and shaped (besides the lower ping) is a reasonably stable ping, without much fluctuations.

My suggestion to you, if Guildwars is playable on the shaped account, meaning you don't get too many lag spikes, then stick to it. RPG's are normally quite playable with an average ping of around 350ms, even higher can work. However, you'll know the answer to that.

Thanks for the help MFour :)

Another strange thing though. I see other people reporting download speeds of over 350-450KB's, while mines going at 210KB's at most. I'm about 3km away from the exchange. Any idea why this is so?

Thanks

Cod uses int bandwidth to verify your cd key, so you would have to set up route sentry if u plan to go the dual accounts route. GW is fine even on a shaped account, just might be a bit laggy during the day.

Is your download speed consistently that slow? Have you tried another ISP? At a different time of day?

Yup tried a different ISP and different hours of the day :(

If I log into the router it says I have the following:

DSL Up 2048 kbps / 384 kbps

That doesn't sound right, does it?

it depends
at 3km - you might not get a stable 4096 sync - so they set you to a static 2048

3072 sync profile is sooooo close to 4096's requirements - thats why you have 2048.

but check other info like line attenuation , snr margins ect - it might help if we know this aswell

I get the following if I do a DSL line test on my router:

noise margin upstream: 13 db
output power downstream: 13 db
attenuation upstream: 31 db

No idea what that means btw :D

I also did a line test over at games.saix.net and found the following:

Your current bandwidth reading is:

1.57 Mbps

which means you can download at 201.53 KB/sec. from our servers.
