Fewer births in SA

Johannesburg - Childbirths as a proportion of the total South African population are at a record low for the first time in more than two decades, the SA Institute of Race Relations said on Thursday.

"Women are choosing to delay childbirth and ultimately have fewer children, so that the number of babies born per 1000 people in a given year is shrinking," SAIRR researcher Thuthukani Ndebele said in a statement.

"A shrinking proportion of births, coupled with better life expectancy, will result in the proportion of young people dropping while that of older persons will grow."

The SAIRR sourced the data from Statistics SA. The birth rate (births per 1 000 people) declined by about 16% between 2002 and 2013, Ndebele said.

Births recorded in 1991 accounted for almost three percent of the country’s population.

"By 2010, that proportion had fallen to 2% and subsequently dropped to 1.8% in 2011," Ndebele said.

It means it's the lowest it's ever been (a record low) for the first time in more than 2 decades.
(So it's the first time in 2 decades that it's been so low it's a record low)

There needs to be no births until all the stupid brick throwers die off first. A low birth rate doesn't mean that they're not still breeding.

Usually all this means is that the economically active populous breeds less, typically a sign of economy starting downturn & also of populations reaching max supportable size(not necessarily land space, economic but rather the populous feeling towards these things) I think.

But let's not forget aids, effect of close to a decade of sex education & planned parenting having its effect as well as availability of birth control which is even freely available to both sexes.
