It is the cheapest cabriolet in SA so, for new cabrios, there is nothing else at that price.
Obviously you are looking for a cabriolet? - you wouldn't be looking at one 'by the way' especially when there is a normal Fiat 500.
What about a second hand MX-5?

Yes, there are cheaper cars in the same category but then you would be looking at Korean and Japanese cars.
The 500 is an icon, cute and all her friends will be overly jealous. You could get a Kia...but then she would own...a Kia.
Not to say Kia is a bad car. Its actually excellent but one for the masses. If she wants to stand out, the 500 is the way to go. I would however recommend the 1.4. The 1.2 is sooooo dull.

Not a convertible Cerato Koup though. For a normal 1.4 500, you're in the Rio price range.

If I had to pick between Fiat and Kia, I'd pick Kia - no questions asked.
If you asked me that question 5 years ago I'd have said Fiat.
The Fiat lacks some features which come standard on the Kia Cerato 2.0 for example:
Optional Interior Features
(500) Climate control
(500) Electrical antidazzle mirror
(500) Leather trim
(500) Parking sensor at rear
With the Fiat you're paying for "cuteness" much like those nutty people who fork out cash for under powered prams (Smart cars).
For R210K I'd expect a bit more "zip" than 0-100km/h in 10.5 seconds. All show and no go.

IMO, the 1.2 Cabriolet isn't that expensive, compared to what it's up against. I can get a brand new 1.2 Cabriolet with a couple of extras for R171k.nice little cars imo, but ridiculously priced

Exactly - you can't get a (new) Cabriolet for the same or less in SA. We are specifically looking at the Cabriolet, yes. If it were a normal hatchback 500 we would've looked elsewhere.
I've always been a bit of a sucker for the MX-5, but the rear seats on the 500 sway the decision in its favor.
I actually test-drove the 1.2 and it wasn't all that dull. Drove it in Centurion with 3 people AND air-conditioning blowing and it wasn't screaming for more air. Besides, the premium you pay for the 1.4C over the 1.2C is just unwarranted...
And with the Fiat you're paying for a CONVERTIBLE.

Why do people keep comparing the 1.2C (at list price R175k) to a car costing on the wrong side of R200k?
Yes - key element that many competitors seem to be missing.

So, we went to have a look at a Funk White (pearlescent) car with a Red roof. Must say, it looks pretty good in the metal! We stepped out of the dealership quite impressed and my wife's anticipation grew by the day. I contacted the dealership this morning to get the ball rolling and... he informed me someone signed an OTP just after we left. Apparently the Funk White cars are extremely rare in SA and my wife, being the persistent person she is, won't settle for anything else. Waiting period is 3-4 months...

So, I picked this little beaut up yesterday afternoon. Did a whole 100km in it last night. Did some alfresco driving all the way back from Centurion to Midrand as well last night. I must say, it is an incredibly fun little car - I'm glad my wife chose it above the Jazz...

Just keep in mind that Fiat dealers are not known for the superb after sales service. You might also find yourself without wheels for quite some time if "a parts needs to be ordered from Italy" - which is the case more often than not.

Luckily the Fiat 500 is based on the Fiat Panda, so they actually share many parts. We tend to take care of our cars and have never had to wait for any parts, not because the parts were available, just because we never NEEDED any parts apart from the standard service filters and so on. Luckily they are opening an new Fiat dealership on the same premises as Honda Midrand (which is known for their exceptional service). AFAIK the same service centre is going to service the Fiats as well, so it's only good news for me. I've been taking my Civic to Honda Midrand now for 3 years and have had nothing but good service from them.
