Fiat shows off new compact SUV, designed in Brazil

Fiat designs a number of bespoke models for Brazil, which makes sense given that this is the Italian carmaker’s biggest market. The latest to emerge is the new Fiat compact SUV that you see here, and it could certainly have global appeal if Fiat ever decided to expand its reach to other markets.

The new SUV’s name, however, has yet to be determined. Perhaps Fiat couldn’t decide on one, but the company has asked its fans to vote for a name for its new high-rider. Participants can choose from three options: Pulse, Domo and Tuo.

Fiat is not saying much else about its new creation but according to Mopar Insiders it will share much of its DNA with the Fiat Argo, which is a hatchback that Fiat designed to replace the Palio and Punto in South American markets.

The publication also reports that Fiat will offer two petrol/ethanol powerplants, in the form of a normally aspirated 1.3-litre Firefly unit with around 74 kW and a new 1-litre Firefly turbopetrol that develops in the region of 97 kW. The latter will also be offered with a CVT gearbox.

This will also be the debut of the new 1.0 Litre turbo engine from Stellantis.

Progetto 363 is slated to go on sale in September 2021 and size-wise it is destined to rival the Hyundai Creta in Latin America and India, being built on Stellantis' next-gen MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform.

Fiat has decided on Pulse for its new South American market only SUV.

Its name the subject of a public participation campaign, Fiat has confirmed that its new compact SUV destined for South America will be called the Pulse.
Beating out the other options, Domo and Tuo, the Pulse, known internally as Project 363, debuts Fiat’s new MLA platform the Italian marque claims has been designed to achieve better ratings when subjected to eventual crash testing by Latin NCAP.

Poised to also underpin its next generation of new models, the Pulse will be built at Fiat’s historic Betim Plant and ride on a 2 532 mm wheelbase with the rest of its dimensions unknown at present.
Set to slot in below sister Stellantis brand Jeep’s Renegade, the Pulse, according to a report from motor1.com Brazil, will sport the latest Uconnect infotainment system as well as four airbags and wireless Apple CarPlay plus Android Auto, in addition to the Fiat Connect Me app that allows for owners to start it and lock as well as unlock the doors from their smartphone.

Known until now as the “SuvFiat”, no details regarding powertrains were revealed, but the Pulse is expected to offer a choice of two versions of the Brazilian build and developed Firefly engine; a normally aspirated 1.3 producing 80kW/139Nm and the 1.0-litre turbo rated at 92kW/196Nm.

A five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT will reportedly be offered with the former, with the only option for the latter being a torque converter six-speed automatic. In both cases though, drive will be routed to the front wheels only, with no possibility of an all-paw gripping system.
Set to arrive in September or October, the Pulse will only be made in left-hand drive with no plans in place to offer a right-hooking model. Pricing is projected to start between R $80 000 (about R214 000) and R $110 000 (about R294 300).

Fiat Pulse subcompact crossover interior revealed with digital displays

The interior of the Fiat Pulse has been revealed, displaying a number of advanced and trendy features. You all might remember the unnamed crossover that was revealed by the Brazilian arm of Italian manufacturer in May this year. Fiat has now closed-in on the Pulse moniker thanks to input from thousands of its fans.

Key features detailed in this cabin include a new multifunctional leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with a somewhat flat base and chrome details, a seven-inch digital cluster, push-start ignition, digital controls for the automatic air conditioning and a floating multimedia 10,1-inch touchscreen infotainment system mounted to the centre of the dash but angled towards the driver.

The Fiat Pulse will compete in the subcompact crossover segment where it’ll battle it out against the likes of the Volkswagen T-Cross and Ford EcoSport. Key details regarding the Fiat Pulse still need to be revealed but it’s understood that it will share most of its components with the Fiat Argo.

With that in mind, it’s possible that the Fiat Pulse will adopt the firm’s naturally aspirated 1,3-litre Firefly petrol engine good for 74 kW or a new 1,0-litre turbopetrol mill that develops in the region of 97 kW. The latter will also be offered with a CVT.
