The Fiat Tipo hatchback has been crash-tested by Euro NCAP in standard form, scoring just three stars for safety. But the organisation also evaluated a second version, fitted with an optional safety pack.

Euro NCAP’s dual rating system, of course, allows a second rating for the same vehicle fitted with an optional safety pack available in European markets.

With the extra safety equipment (including a forward collision warning system with an auto-brake function) fitted, the Tipo scored four stars.

“The Tipo is marketed as a functional car which maximises value for money. However, to maximise safety, and to bring the car up to the protection levels offered by its biggest rivals in this segment, consumers should not pass over the safety pack,” said Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen.

The Tipo is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the first quarter of 2017, in both sedan and hatchback guise. We’ll have to wait to see whether the optional safety pack is offered in our market.

You see "Tipo" and first think it must be a car sized for half a five-year old... then you think what a stupid name.... then you see a very mature mildly styled sedan and you think W...T....F.... then you realise it's Fiat, anything is possible (well except good sales figures.... and resale value.... and reliability)

This Fiat Tipo travelled 41 000km in 133 days

A standard-specification Fiat Tipo has completed a journey of 41 000km in just 133 days. That’s more than 308km per day.

The road trip consisted of travelling through 22 countries and 122 cities with motoring journalist Okan Altan in the driving seat.

The Fiat Tipo hatch and sedan will be due for a local release in May 2017 and will be available with 1.3-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines with the option of manual and automatic transmissions.

Stock standard

Before departing from the Tofas factoryin Bursa, Turkey, Fiat says its Tipo did not undergo any additional technical preparations ahead of its long journey.

The first stages of the tour were in Europe - travelling from Turkey to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and then Russia. The car travelled alongside the Trans-Siberian railway - going for 11 hours a day, for eight days in total.

Altan then headed to Japan before boarding a ship to Mexico. It, however, was not smooth-sailing for Altan, says Fiat, as a bureaucratic error forced him to wait 11 days before he could enter the North American country.

His journey continued with a 40-day boat trip crossing the 6000km stretch of the Atlantic Ocean that separates Mexico from the United Kingdom. The Fiat Tipo then took on a number of European countries including Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy before returning home.

400 hours of driving

The journey was made possible by the Tipo project, which involved a team of over two thousand engineers and specialists over a period of three years who clocked nearly nine million kilometres of test driving in extreme conditions, says Fiat.

Altan’s journey tested the Fiat in adverse weather conditions. It also tested its reliability and comfort as Altan spend more than 400 hours behind the wheel.

Pricing! Eight-model Fiat Tipo range headed to SA...

Fiat South Africa is preparing to launch the new Tipo – in both sedan and hatchback body styles – in South Africa, and we’ve learned pricing for the local, eight-strong range.

Essentially serving to replace the Bravo hatchback and Linea sedan locally, the Tipo was unveiled as long ago as 2015 (we drove it a year ago in Italy). In terms of size, one would expect the Turkey-built Tipo to compete with the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf/Jetta. The sedan will also have the Toyota Corolla and Corolla Quest squarely in its sights.

Pricing for the sedan starts at R229 900, while the hatchback range kicks off some R20 000 higher. Three trim levels – Pop, Easy and Lounge – will be offered, along with three powertrains.

Base models will be powered by a naturally aspirated 1,4-litre petrol engine worth 70 kW and 127 N.m, while the range-toppers will employ a 1,6-litre petrol mill (81 kW/152 N.m) mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic. In addition, the hatchback will be offered with a 70 kW/200 N.m 1,3-litre turbodiesel engine married to a five-speed manual.

We should learn more about the specification levels of the range once the Tipo officially launches in South Africa in mid-May.

Pricing:

Fiat Tipo 1,4 Petrol Pop Sedan: R229 900
Fiat Tipo 1,4 Petrol Easy Sedan: R249 900
Fiat Tipo 1,3 Diesel Easy Sedan: R274 900
Fiat Tipo 1,6 Petrol Easy Auto Sedan: R274 900
Fiat Tipo 1,4 Petrol Pop Hatch: R249 900
Fiat Tipo 1,4 Petrol Easy Hatch: R269 900
Fiat Tipo 1,4 Petrol Lounge Hatch: R289 900
