Fiat Tipo

Fiat Tipo facelift pricing and standard spec revealed for South Africa

The Fiat Tipo range was given a thorough facelift last year which also introduced a new crossover variant. The compact Italian hatch and sedan have finally made their way to South Africa.

The changes made to the updated Fiat Tipo hatch and sedan duo include a revised front and rear bumper and a new set of body paint colours.

Interestingly, the lowest priced example of the entire range is the Fiat Tipo Sedan at R299 900. As standard on this model is a set of 15-inch steel wheels, DAB radio with Bluetooth and a multifunction steering wheel. A more conclusive City Life trim is available at R369 900 which brings with it 16-inch steel wheels (but 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels are available as an option), chrome finish and black gloss exterior details and a 5,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Fiat Tipo City Life Hatch is priced at R369 900 as well but boasts LED DRLs and 16-inch alloy wheels. The flagship of the range is the Life trim with an asking price of R399 900. On here you’ll find LED taillamps, chrome door handles, the aforementioned 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, a 3,5-inch TFT digital instrument cluster, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry.

SA PRICING: Facelifted Fiat Tipo is here to rival Polo, Ballade

The previous Fiat Tipo offered good value for money but buyers never warmed to it in large numbers, which is why it’s still a very rare sight on our roads.

Nonetheless, Fiat is taking another crack at it with the facelifted model that you see here. Priced between R299 900 and R449 900, the Fiat Tipo hatch and sedan range will go up against rivals like the Honda Fit and Ballade. The Volkswagen Polo is also a popular contender in this space, although it’s worth noting that the Tipo is closer to the VW Golf in overall size.

So what’s new for 2021?

For starters, the Fiat Tipo gets a more elegant look, thanks to a new grille with Fiat block lettering as well as a redesigned bumper and fresh headlights, while higher-spec models now feature full LED lighting both front and rear. Rounding it off is a selection of new look 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels, some featuring a diamond finish.

What’s under the bonnet?

Depending on the model grade chosen, buyers can choose between two normally aspirated petrol engines. The 1.4-litre unit, with 70kW and 127Nm, is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, while the 1.6-litre motor, good for 81kW and 152Nm, is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

All models are sold with a five-year/100 000km warranty and three-year/100 000km service plan.

Fiat 500X and Fiat Tipo gain hybrid powertrains

New additions mean every model in the Italian brand's line-up is now available with an electrified powertrain

The Fiat 500X compact crossover and Fiat Tipo hatchback and estate have gained hybrid powertrains, meaning every car in the brand's range is now available in an electrified form.

Prices start at £27,585 for the 500X Hybrid, while the Tipo Hybrid starts at £27,595. They're distinguishable from their ICE-only counterparts thanks to a Hybrid logo on the tailgate.

Both models have a 1.5-litre four-cylinder Firefly petrol engine and a 20bhp electric motor to produce combined totals of 128bhp and 177lb ft of torque.

Drivers can expect a 0-62mph time of 9.4sec in the 500X Hybrid and 9.3sec in the Tipo Hybrid.

The pair are the first hybrid Fiats that can be driven with a completely disconnected engine, which Fiat claims “can remain idle for up to 47% of the time”. In addition, CO2 emissions are 11% lower.

Fiat says the electric motor helps to improve efficiency and dynamics of the cars and that they're capable of running on electricity alone at engine start-up, when creeping forward in traffic and when parking. They also benefit from regenerative braking.

Fiat Tipo hatchback pulled from UK as brand overhauls line-up

Combustion-engined family car to be replaced by 600e crossover as Fiat reinvents its range for the electric era

The Fiat Tipo has been taken off sale in the UK after seven years, as part of a ground-up overhaul of the Fiat line-up.

The family hatchback and estate models will be indirectly replaced by the new 600e electric crossover.

The Tipo’s departure leaves the 500 and Panda as the Italian brand’s only non-SUV cars on sale in the UK.

It was never a core part of Fiat's UK business, having been historically far outsold by its city-car siblings and the similarly sized 500X crossover.

It remains available to order in other markets around the world.

A Fiat spokesperson told Autocar that the firm is “committed to electric urban mobility” and as such the Tipo’s indirect replacement in the UK will be the 600e, set to go on sale next month from £32,995 as a rival to the Kia Niro EV and Volvo EX30.
