Do any of you know of progress made with fiber infrastructures in Midrand, Gauteng?

ADSL is long gone for us due to cable theft and we've been on wireless 3G (Vodacom and 8ta) for several years now.

We've been considering alternatives like WiMax but haven't gone for anything yet.

Well hello neighbor.

Isn't it ****ing annoying how these scum ****ed up our lines and ADSL in Midrand for R50 copper!!!

In some parts of Midrand Telkom went underground with standard lines, bastards went one house down from me as they were on a different exchange, and trying to speak to Telkom, more joy having root canal while bashing your head in a brick wall.

Re Fiber - I don't think much has been done and it would probably be more around the commercial side and not towards the plots, too expensive and not enough clients.

Quite a shame how they've wrecked it for us. Uncapped ADSL is just what I need but can't get.

If Fiber is too slow in being established, then I suppose there's no real other alternative to wireless internet for the next couple of years. At least I get good speeds on 8ta but the cap is severely limiting.

I would move if I could, circumstances unfortunately won't let me, but the first chance I get, cheers.
Haven't tried 8ta (**** Telkom), cell C when it works is ok, vodacom always works just a tad expensive, MTN with Afrihost is fine, Neotel are crap.

I also cannot just move. I live on a plot and moving from this amazing place just to get ADSL... no ways!

We're actually just a block away from malls and townhouse complexes. After the third cable theft Telkom stated that they refuse to put up the cables again.

Yeh, I'm sure I can see your house, go outside and wave.

I would so move for proper internet, plus Midrand traffic has gone beyond crazy last few years.

I see that they are digging up sidewalks by the mosque all the way down to past dischem warehouse, could that possibly be for fibre??
if so would we be able to benifit from it?

Fibre or not, I don't think there is any "feasibility" on the short term to have fibre to the "regular home consumer" unless you are prepared to pay big bucks.

I'm sure NEOTEL can supply you with fibre if you are ready to pay and sign for at least 2 year contract. Their cheap plan is going for R1600 excl for 1mbps. Also add R1500 excl for installation.

I heard that there's a few (or more than a few) Wireless ISP around midrand that can give you easily 5 or 10mbps wireless connections for good prices.
