Hi,

I’m window shopping around for stuff, and I’m interested in fiber optic, but can’t find any price per meter of something

Does any know of a shop in SA or in some other country where I can buy fiber optic cables

Distance is ~20km

tnx

Not that I am in the market to buy fiber, but I am curious about what it will cost.

it depends on the amount you buy.

One meter should set you back retail about R20-R25.

It is now very much a commodity item.

I recently ordered 1000km for a project I manage and we were able to source gloablly at very competitive prices.

I dont know where you can get it retail but just look in the yellow pages. or call these guys - optical fibre trends (bertie)

cheers

Ok so my 20km = 20,000 meters x R25 = R500,000.00 that’s a cr@p load of money just for a private connection, it’s a 1000Base converter and cost R837.00 per piece, so its probably better to do a wireless connection of 20km and be happy with a 1~2 MBps connection and pay ~ R7,000.00 for the complete setup

Will there be any money for me if I lay my own fiber optic cable to a town with no ADSL?

Hoe much does the labor cost to lay a cable man? Not even to talk about a 1000km

probably... or if you have the Line Of Sight pay more and get more bandwidth out your wireless

Wasn't there some funky rule that one could not lay fiber across the boundaries of each plot of land or something?

Aside from smoke signals, I'd agree that wireless is probably the best option. Don't the big companies route their internal stuff over some kind of microwave dishes?

At one time - not too long ago - your network couldn't extend beyond your property boundary - cable or wireless.

Good to know. To bad that my neighbor is not a gamer.

The board has a new feature that catches double posts. woot.
