Fiber optics , LX, SX , and splicing

Someone who uses a splicer showed me how to do it and then I did it.
Firstly you need to decide , fiber distance and budget. Short distance low budget , go multimode.

Will fiber go underground or above. Is it going over private property.
Fiber is cheap=20cents a meter.
pull in fiber
prepare [ need a hacksaw and knife and alcohol wipes.
Splicer and cleaver R60 000. [Lambda in pta.]

you can now take a change and connect the 2 modems and see if they talk.
Swop tx and rx, if still not working you will have to get a lightsource and meter R30 000.

there you go
 
is single mode and multi mode two totally different types of fiber? can both be used in the same applications? and what are the pro's and cons of each?
 
No, that's just the last time ponder worked with them!!! :p

lol, the last time I did costing on fiber installation was about 5-6yrs ago but a quick google reveals the prices are still about the same :D
 
I see prices have not changed in over 10 years :) I used to do instalations and then moved on to designing networks and project manageing the instalations.

Do you work for yourself or a company?

I've mailed a few of the suppliers but not gotten anything just yet.

It was usually for an entire project. Cisco routers & switches, Lan cables & FO cabling. All with detailed breakdown to component level, essentially a detailed bill of materials so will include pigtails, connectors, splicing etc.. Sorry, did not keep any of the company information.
 
I worked for a company, we did the SARS offices networks, Correctional Services networks, etc. Before that company I worked for a company where we did the ABSA banks, FNB banks and some other odd sites in the middle of no where... :) I still know how too terminate IBM Type 1 cables,RG-58 (and other size), CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6, Multi-mode and Single mode fibre, and network configuration (including fall back redundancy etc) but that was a few years ago :)

Does anyone know of any good places to get training in splicing fiber optic cables?

Been on Google but I don't know how trustworthy some of the results are.
 
Multimode Fibre works on the SX GBICs/SFP modules, but not on LX and up. (I am ignoring FX since its 100mbit)

If you going to lay fibre between different buildings, I suggest to go with LX GBIC/SFP modules and single mode fibre. I attempted this one with SX and multimode fibre on building right next to each other. What I didn't take into account is all the extra turns and paths the cables took inside the building. Ofcoarse this was 2x Data Centres next to each other in the same block even.

Now the SX GBIC/SFP modules can use single mode and multimode fibre, so you can't really go wrong with using single mode fibre. So unless you 100% certain your distance meets the criteria of SX modules and multimode fibre, try to go with LX and single mode.

Easiest usually is to work out the path and distance beforehand, and then just order the cables at the length you need. But if you want to go the "splice yourself route" then you are welcome to go that route. In my experience, in the long run it is easier and simpler to just order them and let the experience guys splice it for you. Once that is done, lay it yourself and light it up.

My rule for choosing SMF vs MMF and SX vs LX modules are this:
- If inside the same building/data center go SX + MMF or even SMF if that is what they supply
- If going outside the building to anywhere else, go LX + SMF, if you can do 2 instead of 1, let them take different paths for redundancy
