Hi Everyone,

I am a Desktop Support Technician, and here at work, we installed a couple of fiber cables. Every time there is a fiber problem, we need to get outside help to come and check what the problem is.

I want to know if there is a budget fiber tester kit that is reliable for doing my own testing. Then, hopefully, I can tell the outside technicians whether they need to do splicing again or if the fiber cable is broken and needs to be replaced, for example.

I am not a qualified fiber technician, but I just want to make life a bit easier. One technician said I need to get a Fluke Network tester, but I see the pricing on those testers is more than I can spend right now. I just need budget-friendly testers to test my fiber line and see if there is a problem. Second-hand is also fine with me; I just need something that can help me.

Can anyone recommend any advice?

Thank you.

Thank you for the info. I will take a look on there website.

I don't know whether it's what you need but I have a Fluke FTK100 which I can be very negotiable on.

Hi Spek

There is no 'one' tool to be used with fiber testing as there are a number of symptoms that can present itself, each needing a specific tool.. If there is a 'one' tool for troubleshooting, it is probably a decent OTDR, but those are really expensive.

For more simpler testing, get yourself
• a light source and power meter to check power levels
- Depending on the type of fibers you installed (P2P / PON etc). choose the correct one
• a VFL (Visual Fault Locator)

This will get you going on the right track. Most of the damage gets done by clients on the fiber patch leads. A VFL is an easy way of identifying these breaks.
