Hi Guys

Just a short and sweet one. I am sure this were asked before but my general knowledge in IT is perhaps below average.

Do Telkom and MWeb (plus other ISP's) use the same fiber? Thus, Telkom no fiber, Mweb no fiber.

Many Thanks

You need to distinguish between network operators (NOs) and internet service providers (ISPs).

Two of the biggest fibre to home NOs are Openserve and Vumatel, others include MTN, Vodacom, Frogfoot, Fibrehoods, Octotel, mitsol, etc.

The ISPs are mostly the same folks who play in the DSL market, eg. Telkom, MWeb, Afrihost, Axxess, Vox, Cybersmart, Crystal Web, Cool Ideas, etc...

Many Thanks, Telkom says there is no fiber to my area (but surrounding there is) and when I question the MWem site for coverage, they say yes.

Thus, I might be lucky?

Regards

If mweb say yes, then you have a chance, but the mweb site is not very detailed. For instance, if I put in Weltevreden Park (my area) they say coverage is available. But in reality, only parts of Weltevreden Park are covered. When you enter your area into mweb's checker here https://www.mweb.co.za/internet-connection/fibre/fibre-to-the-home, the results include a list of infrastructure providers. Take note of who the providers are and check the individual providers coverage maps to get more detail.

Mistake #1: "Telkom" is an ISP and only make use of the Fibre networks of OpenServe and Vumatel.

It is possible that one or more of the of network operators has your area covered. As coop correctly posted, you need to check which NO Mweb will be using in your area.

Mistake #2: Choosing MWEB as your fibre ISP. If you can, there are a lot better ISP's out there, which gives you better packages for cheaper.
