Fibre is being wired up in my suburb by Telkom! I asked a supervisor and he said the whole area shouldn't take much more than a month.

Just a few questions for those in the know:
- Does the fibre connectivity only get enabled when the whole area is ready to go?
- If Telkom installs the fibre you can use any ISP right?
- Will my ADSL connection die when I switch over? I'm with Afrihost and they don't offer fibre.

My household uses an enormous amount of data every month (seldom less than 450GB), and this is the most promising connection I've come across:
Web Africa 1000GB + 100Mbps Fibre Line - R1649pm

I think a 1TB cap is as good as being uncapped. Is this probably my best option, or is there some obscure FTTH ISP that can offer a better deal? When I come across a new fibre ISP it's usually a company I've never heard of, so not easy to evaluate all options.

Which area of PE is it being installed? Out of interest.

That 1TB for R1649 is on the Vumatel network.

Just bear in mind that WA have "Home capped" and "Business capped".I would clarify with them which capped package you are getting.P2P on home capped is severely shaped during business hours.

Thanks! Didn't even spot that button. How very disappointing that the value for money isn't anywhere near as good. :(

None of the Telkom options with Web Africa look great. R1748pm for 300GB is rubbish. You only save a hundred bucks by decreasing the speed all the way down to 40Mbps.

Damn. I see the Vox prices are basically identical.

Start analysing your usage patterns... what are you using it on and at what time of the day. This has a significant impact on your choice of ISP.

Every month is 450-550GB, with a relatively small portion between midnight and early morning. Lots of PC's, lots of PC gamers, lots of HD streaming etc.

Looks like Web Africa is the only option atm for Telkom fibre installations. Vox and Telkom have even worse prices. At least Web Africa gives loads of midnight data.

Looks like my only option is 300GB + 1.2TB midnight data for R1738pm. Increasing to 400GB + 1.6TB jumps the price all the way to R2048pm, which makes me deeply uncomfortable.

All of Telkom's packages give you free after midnight unlimited data.

Also check Crystal Web's offerings...

Crystal Web's fibre page just asks people to express their interest in fibre. I don't think the Telkom deal is worth it, as you lose a hundred gigs and only save R138. 1.2TB is no different to unlimited for me, as far as midnight data goes.

Why are the Telkom fibre prices so crazy everywhere? Is Telkom's fibre network vastly superior, or do they charge ISP's ludicrous line rental or something?

Same price for the IPC as ADSL. So the cost per Mbps is still the same for the ISPs.
