MTN is laying fibre in my area - when companies other than Telkom lay fibre in areas do they connect to the local Telkom exchange or how does it work?

I see people speculating that their slow ADSL speeds are due to the MTN fibre being laid in the area, but I personally doubt this has anything to do with it..

The only time it will impact ADSL performance is if they hit a Telkom cable while digging...

And the distribution cables of other network operators will go to their own node rooms, which could (in a few cases) be on the same property as Telkom's exchange. In most cases it is not.

PS. You mean the fibre distribution cables?

Not sure on the right terminology.. my assumption is that they have a central 'exchange' of their own in the area that the last-mile fibre connections run to, and then from there it runs on their own national back bone - not telkoms... is that correct?

Basically, yes. No exchanges but aggregation points and splitters...
