Fibre Cancellation fees

Hey everyone.

Lately there seems to be a push by ISPs to charge their customers (sometimes exorbitant) cancellation fees. I had the displeasure of dealing with Web Africa lately. After combing through their Ts and Cs myself I had to defend myself from paying in a R1800 installation fees that needed to be "clawed back" when in fact there were no installation fees incurred initially. Being the premises already had fibre installed.

It was quite scary to realize an ISP would of charged me R1800 for no reason what so ever. The average Jo might just have gone ahead and paid it. I eventually got them to agree to the fact that the only cancellation fees required by me was mailing the router back. This was many many WhatsApp messages later and lots of Googling their Ts and Cs.

Why are ISPs charging this fee and is it not considered anti competitive behavior? Perhaps an ISP representative can give more information here. I am currently (trying) to switch to another ISP as their pricing is is way more competitive since the Frogfoot package changes. R700 vs R520. If my current ISP won't let me just migrate without the R2500 cancellation fee (unless I stay a year with them) then I might just have to suck it up for the next few months and pay for my current internet.

Just thought I would raise my frustration. ADSL was never this difficult. I would just cancel my monthly 10 gig account and then log in with the newer ISP I went. Got a new username and password and that was it. No downtime. No crazy fees. It just worked. This R2500 cancellation fee is almost 5 months of a fibre subscription. It's crazy.

The installation fee is charged by the fibre network operator (FNO), not by the ISP.

If you take out a contract they take on the fee on your behalf unless you cancel before the stipulated contract length.

EVen if fibre is installed I believe the charge applies anyway just for connecting you and this is from the FNO side which the ISP simply passes on tp you.
 
FNO Charge > ISP > Customer In Some instances ISP takes the hit and says it's a free install while others charge the upfront cost of either 2500 or 1800. Usually, the going rate is 6 months to a year for free installation accounts (to retain expenses or to break even) It's not uncommon, free installs are never free. I am always upfront about this with all customers I onboard to my small company.
