Fibre in Glenwood (Durban)

Hi all

I've seen OpenServe branded boxes (what I can only assume are the exchanges) cropping up all over the Glenwood area. Many residents have also reported that OpenServe guys have dug up parts of the roads and some driveways to lay cabling. Just wanted to know what was happening with the rollout as the OpenServe site tells me that we don't have fibre available here and Vumatel keeps putting up posters saying that we should "show our support" on their website (which I have encouraged fellow residents to do).

Try to speak to one of the technicians, better if it is a senior one. Looks to be a cut-over to ISAM equipment :). Google says this area is 7.2KMs from your area, maybe it's this? Confirm if internet goes off at the time specified.

Montclair is SO far from Glenwood... This isn't relevant unfortunately
 
Found something weird the other day. Was going through different websites checking fibre coverage. Houses that are literally down the road from me have fibre coverage with DFA but I don't. Openserve, Vumatel and basically every other provider says that I don't have coverage but then WebAfrica says that I can get fibre and they're more than willing to assist..not too sure how that works. Only issue I have now is that my mom uses a TelkomSA.net email address for all of her work and for whatever reason, changing the SMTP server settings within Outlook no longer allows me to use another ISP with that mailbox (I used to be able to use an Afrihost or WebAfrica ADSL account on my router and then simply change the SMTP settings within Outlook to that of the provider I was signed in with and it would work perfectly).
Have a look at WebAfrica.

Webafrica screwed me around earlier this year. Whole 5 weeks we placed an order with Mitsol via WebAfrica and we were assured it was NOT a pre-order and that it was live. So we waited for an installer to come and they never showed up, eventually, webafrica said "There is no infrastructure for Mitsol" and they cancelled the order, wasting a whole month and a bit.

Are you in Glenwood?

Yeah I am. Ah damn, that's annoying. Really wish there weren't incompetent people protesting at every second street corner to stop the roll out of fibre because they're bored and have nothing better to do.
The only way you can get fibre in this city is if you're a multi-billion Rand business, you're in a larny area like Umhlanga or Kloof or you live in an estate.

Awe neighbour, Im in the Umbilo area also patiently awaiting fibre. it sucks

Ya I don't think fibre is going to get to Umbilo in my lifetime, hey. Could be wrong but I wouldn't count on it.
If rain coverage wasn't so garbage around here, I would've stuck with them. Unlimited data between 11PM and 6PM the next day (19 hours worth) for R250 a month is next to nothing. I'm now paying R300 for 40 gigs day and 40 gigs night data from MTN.

Iol i really hope you are wrong, i need fibre in my life already!!!!

But anyway, im with Telkom and pay R359 for the 40day 20 night package.
Speeds are great for showmax, FB, Youtube etc.

only issue i have is i need more data.. lol want to upgrade to the 120gig package at R699...

My Telkom LTE speeds have been very hit or miss lately. My ballie got a 10 gig day and 10 gig night contract from Telkom for R100 a month just to stream some series on occasion and nothing seems to buffer (even using a Huawei LTE router).
I would wait for one of their monthly deals and get that if you need more data. They tend to have some real good deals on occasion.
 
Yes thats true, But mines been pretty solid lately.. i need to upgrade sometime soon.. but then they up the price because its only been 14months in the current contract.

Orrr i will go with Afrihost via MTN LTE. 100gig for R549

That MTN fixed LTE is probably the cheapest for R100 gigs (Axxess also wants R549 per month).
See what Telkom will offer you once that contract expires or buy a rain SIM card for 1 month and test it in your area (that's what I did). You can cancel the rain SIM any time.
Can you not get ADSL or VDSL?

i wont bother with ADSL or VDSL, moms down the road and her ADSL been discontinued due to theft blah blah.

Telkoms been good to me at the moment so ill probably just upgrade with them... or wait for retentions
 
Vumatel and Link Africa are opening up soon. Let's hope 2020 is the year. Also rain is doing pretty well this side, so you can give that a try till then. Still got Adsl for lower latency.

My rain was absolutely useless by me. At work in Umhlanga, I had absolutely no signal. I come home and I get 2 meg down. Latency wasn't any better for gaming either.
Parts around Windermere, Florida Road, Umgeni Road (that sort of area) had absolutely amazing signal. Got 60 meg down on rain no problem but not in Glenwood.
I signed a 24 month contract with MTN for a data SIM with 40 gigs day and 40 gigs night for R300 per month. Definitely faster and I at least have signal in Umhlanga now but the latency isn't particularly consistent. I'll still use my 4 meg DSL for torrents, big game downloads and low latency gaming.

I was very lucky to have fibre in the Durban North area, My mate on the other hand is in the part of La lucia that doesn't have Fibre. We also saw people working outside looking like they were installing cables.

He does get pretty decent speeds with LTE there though.

On rain I'm managing 60-80mbps most of the time and yesterday was peaking at 35mbps upload too. Mind you I have an antenna pointing at a tower now.

MTN got me a full 150/50 but data is too expensive. I just want the lower latency of fibre, even tempted to replace the adsl with a 20 FTTB connection...
