Hi everyone

I'll start off apologising as I'm not very tech-savvy, but I've been reading up a lot over the past day so hopefully I'll be thorough with my problem.

My parent's house is with Telkom Internet and has been for some time. Until two days ago, we knew that the package we were on was the DSL 40gig, and on a 2mbps line as far as the speed tests could tell.

Last week a Telkom salesperson phoned and let us know that we could upgrade our line from DSL to fibre, and get a new router, all for free. Of course, we didn't turn down a free deal. Within a week (yesterday morning,in fact), the technician rocked up, installed the line, made sure we were connected, and once satisfied we were set up, left.

What confuses me now - and I may just be ignorant here - is that our speed hasn't changed at all. Would it have changed, at least be a little faster? The speed test still indicates about 2mbps (1,8 on average). The Telkom coverage map indicates our area is covered for fibre. And when I checked the router configuration, under the WAN status, it indicates that the speed (DL/UL) is 1000M/1000M.

I'm not sure what a lot of this means, but I thought that upgrading to a fibre line would improve speed, at least a little. Otherwise why would they do any upgrades at all? Is it just for more stable connections, as I have read elsewhere?

Thanks for your patience.

Kind regards,
R

The reason why the speed hasn't changed is that their package is probably still the same. So its not really an upgrade at all.

I'd have a look at what packages they offer and what other ISP's you are able to choose.

The (DL/UL) 1000M/1000M speed indicated is what the line is capable off (not that any ISP I know of offers such speeds yet), my router shows the same. But since I am on a Afrihost 10mbps fibre account, 10mbps is all I get. Just a few clicks (and a much bigger debit order) and I can get 100mbps just like that.

Oh, and now you don't have to unplug your router when there is lighting, only if you're worried that the lightning will fry everything else over the electricity grid of the house would you need to plug out its power.

Telkom gives nothing away for free. You paid for it, probably in the form of a long term contract.

Thanks for the speedy replies everyone.

We'll check with Telkom what the deal is, in terms of contractual obligations. We're not using the internet for a hell of a lot of stuff right now anyway, but it might be worthwhile looking into what deals we can get now that the fibre is installed.

Thanks again!

Changing the physical connection from Copper to Fibre won't increase your speed. It just increases the maximum possible speed.
If you want a faster connection, you are going to have to pay more. As you were still far away from the maximum ADSL/copper speed, you didn't actually need to change to fibre, you could have just upgraded your account
