Be a generally nice a pleasant person and they may not charge you anything, happens a lot.

If they start grumbling about the extra length, off them 200 odd bucks cash after work drinks, and you may get off lightly as well.

To be fair that gent was told there would be an extra charge than never asked how much it would be.
If someone says there going to be an extra charge ask how much before saying go ahead.
If it's too much you just say no thank you.
