Fibre installation madness - am I done?

Please help me:

Can someone please confirm if these two boxes are the TP and the ONT? So, all that is required is for me to plug in a router, and enter the ISP’s details/my account details, and done? Fibre installer insists I need the ISP’s router, or nothing will work...

The green ethernet cable runs back to a network cabinet with switch, which feeds three Ubiquiti AP’s. The installer’s who did the latter told me to plug in the fibre, and then power on the switch.

If I’m correct, that ethernet cable is to be connected to the ONT, and then I’m done - barring my entering my ISP details?


This has been dragging on for days now, and several weeks since the initial order - I just desperately need to get my internet up and running...

Would appreciate any assistance!

You need a router connected to that box on the floor (WAN port) then the green cable must connect to the LAN port of said router.

Or connect green cable to box on floor then on the other end of the green cable connect it to WAN port of router then add another ethernet cable from router to switch.


Who is your ISP? Some need PPPoE details and some dont.


Looking at the pics, i dont see the fiber cable coming from the street, is that present?

Thanks for helping.

Fibre from street comes into the first box, it’s hidden behind it, but comes throught conduit out of the white “plug” box on the wall.

ISP is Bitco. We’re very limited ito options, was very happy with Afrihost in previous house - but they don’t offer a FTTH service on the estate we’ve moved to. Bitco was the biggest of the options I had, so went with them.

I have an old ASUS router that I used previously. It was connected directly to the ONT. Could that work, or should I just wait it out for the Bitco one?

I gather from what you’re telling me is that I still need a router between the ONT and the switch/Ubiquiti AP’s, correct?
 
Have just received my username and password from Bitco.

Until their router arrives, could I use my router in “bridge mode”(??), so that internet is fed through to the switch and Ubiquiti AP’s?

So I would connect it as above, with green ethernet into OTP, and then into router in the network cabinet, and then out into the switch?
 
No. You wouldn't need to run it in bridge mode. If you ISP provide PPPOE details, just set your router to "router" mode and enter the PPPOE details. If its DHCP, set it to router and enable the dhcp client

And I then hook into my router, and enter the ISP's username/password, and good to go?

Will check DCHP.

Yes, that would be the config, you can't go directly from ONT to Switch because a switch is a layer 2 device and doesn't deal with IPs. So in layman's terms you still need a router to route LAN and WAN traffic.

We just moved in here – and now, I need to find a long-enough ethernet cable, to be able to attach my PC to the router, to be able to get in to configure it...

And typically – the loooonnnnngggg ethernet cable is somewhere in the garage, along with all the other moving mayhem stuff – and whilst I saw it a few days ago, cannot find it now for love or money...

So much joy. Will hopefully show-up soon, before the ISP's router!

Bah... Tried my luck, and no go. Found the ethernet cable in the last box I would think to look in, on the third try, and logged in. Entered by username details etc., but no joy. Possibly not active yet.

Fortunately, Bitco has now scheduled the router installation drop-off for tomorrow afternoon, so might as well bite the bullet and wait it out.
 
So Bitco’s people are here now. Connected router to ONU, and nothing. No internet. Fibre installer confirmed they activated the ONU, and that it must be a BITCO/router issue.

Still so much joy. Hoping they can get this sorted.


As an aside - since the router is clearly doing what it should (sending out a wifi network), when it is then connected to the switch - does it just magically stop doing that - and allow the switch/Ubiquiti’s to then take over?

No that doesn't sound right, is it in bridge mode perhaps

Good to hearenjoy the fibre, I'm getting mine installed on Monday and this weekend is going to be so long and gruelling.
