Fibre Network Operators are "killing" Telkom

Telkom has reorganized it business and operates as an ISP in the retail space. Wholly owned subsidiary Openserve owns and maintains the copper and fibre network. Openserve will not keep replacing copper in areas of high theft and poor quality cable. The model is to migrate ADSL customers to a wireless broadband solution like LTE and WCDMA for geographic wireless voice only service. Telkom offers FTTH/B over Vumatels or Openserve networks currently. All this will pale into insignificance when 5G is rolled out. Telkom maybe losing customers on its aging copper infrastructure but it has gained customers on its mobile network

Strangely enough, given the choice between FTTH/FTTB and Telkom's LTE, I'm quite sure that most would choose FTTH/FTTB and tell Telkom where to shove that LTE.

If Telkom's idea of competing against fibre network operators, is to offer LTE instead of FTTH/FTTB, Telkom might as well start the fire sale now.

Copper is a cash cow for Telkom. Service delivery has been a problem for them since the early 90's.

Do Telkom not have a massive stake in Vumatel?

Not in Vumatel, but definitely in Openserve, it's apparently a subsidiry of Telkom I've heard?

At this time the only thing still keeping Telkom afloat is their mobile phone service. They still manage to lure the masses over to them with their crazy low prices, but with that comes crazy non existent service and poor cellphone coverage. Some of my friends are on Telkom Mobile and if they're inside a Pick n Pay or some buildings they don't have reception, crazy.

About 1 km away from Mount Edgecombe, which has fibre.
