Fibre or VDSL

Vumatel has just rolled out fibre in my area. Normally I would go for it, but I have looked at the figures and wonder whether it is worth it.

Of big concern is the mess they will make to run a fibre cable into my house. They laid a cable into my neighbour's house and the white pipes they use are very unsightly.

But my real question to this group is whether the performance will actually improve for me. I currently have a 20mbps VDSL and am reasonably happy with the response. I am getting a ping rate of 8-11ms, download speed of around 19.5mps and upload of around 2.85mbps.

My Afrihost 20mbps VDSL connection with 300gb unshaped includes the Telkom ADSL line at R675pm.
A 20mps Fibre connection with 200gb will cost me R767pm.

I know I can go faster on fibre, but I am not prepared to spend more money at the moment.

My question is whether I will notice any improvement going fibre? Especially considering the extra cost.

Unless you'd benefit from better upload rates you might as well stay on VDSL.

I faced the same dilemma: 20Mb VDSL functioning perfectly, so why change ?

That is, until the VDSL was no longer functioning perfectly, so Telkom switched the line to ADSL 2+.

I upgraded to fibre within a fortnight.

switching to fibre means you get rid of the very unnecessary and stupid "line rental" that you HAVE to pay Telkom...even if you don't use a landline to phone.

^^and of course...if you're on fibre you can always very easily upgrade to better speed options.

If you went with fiber, the main benefits for you would be a lower ping (which only really matters for gaming), a higher upload (helps with things like your phone uploading photos, sending emails with attachments, uploading videos to youtube etc) and (depending on the package you choose) unmetered bandwidth.

If any of the above are important to you, go for fiber. If not, then stick with what you have until you have a reason to upgrade.

Couldn't you just put in your own conduits to your spec/underground and then have Vuma will the the fibre into those?

Thats what I had to do when I wanted to move my Telkom line otherwise it would have been a ****show of hotglue everywhere.

You also won't have much of the unreliability associated with copper.

There's no comparison between fibre and VDSL. I changed from 40Mbps VDSL to 100Mbps fibre and it's night and day. The lower latency isn't just felt for gaming - it affects everything you do. Websites load faster, streams commence earlier etc. The increase in upload is incredibly useful if you use Google Drive or similar. And as mentioned it's far more reliable than ADSL or VDSL.
