Hey guys,

Not that i am getting fibre anytime soon although i wish i was in one of those lucky area's

I just wanted to confirm the following as even with ADSL they never broadcasted the fact that your internet line was devided 8 ways with asymetrical shared lines

What I wanted to know is if the lines are symetrical or is Telkom still splicing your line and falsely advertising what you actually get... because if they are doing with fibre the same with adsl that means for a 100mb we will only ever see 12.5 mb actual downloads...

The reason for the question is because Telkom doesnt share this crucial information and it would suck as they are enforcing 2 year contracts again(Talk about moving backwards)...

I ask the same for all the new players in the market such as vumatel and dark fibre africa etc

Upload is not really crucial but still important for streaming if you are hosting a stream etc but download... I dont wanna one be still paying for a speed advertised thats not actually what you are getting...

Let me know thanks

No one is falsely advertising anything.

Think you are confusing contention ratio's with data rate units.

Contention Ratio:
This is a measurement of the number of other subscribers you are "contending" with for your share of bandwidth leading to your local exchange. For example, the contention ratio as published by Telkom is 20:1, this means that you would share your bandwidth with no more than 20 subscribers on the Telkom Network.

For data rate just go read here:

They will sell it as "up to 100Mbps". You will still contend with other users that is for sure, in actual fact before the fibre actually gets to the MSAN it is split between 32-64 times, there should be enough bandwidth but it is not guaranteed....and then the shaping...aaarg

You're confusing contention ratios, asynchronous lines and shaping.

Contention Ratios: as an example a group of 20 houses is each given a 1meg line, however from the exchange there won't be a 20meg connection rather just a 1meg, the contention ratio is now 20:1. Fibre will still have contention ratios.

Asynchronous lines: It's what the A in ADSL stands for, either up or down is lower. In home ADSL up is lower as download speed is more important. Fibre is synchronous so you'll get the same speed up and down.

Shaping: this is when ISP's manage your data usage so the network isn't overloaded. Downloads/torrents etc are throttled to keep the network stable. Shaping will depend on where the market swings, I think it'll stay that capped will remain unshaped and uncapped will be shaped. Or everything will be shaped so the backbone doesn't have to be upgraded as much.

Is the 8 ways they divide the line not bits and bytes you are thinking of? A 2 Mbps line is 2 mega bits per second. Divide by 8 to get the speed in megabytes.
