What does a person do with routers that you longer longer use.. I have two.. A huawei and a dlink that are just gathering dust.. Cash crusader and converters don't take them..

You Google the model numbers and see if they have support for any custom firmware and then you have something to play with, turn off DHCP and use them as access points for better Wi-Fi coverage or give them away.

+1

You don't even need to install custom firmware since you can set it up as a dumb access point. I have personally used old adsl modems in this way and switched from using the 2Ghz band to the 5Ghz band inside my house. Overall it will improve throughput and stability which is what many people complain about when they have fast internet connections with poor wifi performance. You don't need an expensive mesh wifi system.

To convert your old router into a dumb access point:
1) assign a static ip address that is within your main routers address range (e.g. 192.168.1.x where x can be set to 2 etc)
2) set the default gateway and dns address to your main router's ip address (e.g. 192.168.1.1)
3) use the same wifi network name, password, authentication method but on a different wifi channel number
4) disable dhcp on your secondary router
5) use power line adapters to create a wired network link or preferably install network cable to the remote location where you want to improve wifi reception
6) at the remote location, plug the network cable into a LAN (not wan) port on the secondary router

Huh? Just because that cheap kuk doesn't have SFP cages, don't paint them with the same brush...

PS: Its [FOR SALE] in the classifieds!

I was being sarcastic but you know what I mean. Everybody claims to be selling a "fibre router" when what they are actually selling is just a plain old router with 1 x ethernet WAN interface and a few ethernet LAN interfaces which have been around long before fibre came along.

Who uses that rubbish? Only one brand...
