It's been a battle. Our suburb was meant to be one of the first to get VDSL a few years ago. Telkom decided to abandon those plans as we were then prioritised to get FTTH as one of the pilot areas. Then that got canned and we were still stuck on ADSL... until 2 months ago when work started here! Now all physical work is done and we are waiting to be able to place orders on their system.
 
I've noticed that the green and blue Telkom boxes in Sunset Park is now much bigger and another colour. I also saw Openserve bakkies working at 1 of them this afternoon at about half past 2. Not sure of this means anything? Why would they change those green and blue boxes?

Yea, all telkom bakkies has been renamed to Openserve. I know of a few fibre rolls that have been rolled out, but was under the impression it is just for the connection between the boxes and the exchange. We can hope and dream still.
 
Just been to Rustenburg over the weekend, my nephew is running Telkom LTE @ 40Mbits uncapped @ R799/m. 3 x 1080p streams at once, no problems...
 
Needs to happen now. I can only get 2 mbps. It's really slow. It's even a struggle to watch videos in 360p sometimes... Takes about a week to update my ps4 games if I haven't done it in a while. Haha
 
It does need to happen, but it will only happen if we make it happen, the people rolling out fibre wants their behindsides licked to shiney state first before they do something.... most of the people here have given up already, so it will be difficult. It would be nice if we could get some more info on the fibre rumors from telkom to find out how much truth is there behind it, but it seems like the people who have those answers does not work in Secunda, or they live on mars.
 
I'm with Crystalweb. They say if you can get 40 to 50 people in a 5 km radius area to sign up with them, they will put in fibre

Do they have a signup page and a counter? 50 people in a suburb is a much more reasonable target if this is to be believed.
 
Im making contact with crystalweb telephonically and linking the secunda fibre initiutive to the email, i really feel that the broadband page should be used to mobilise us in the community, but the secunda fibre page should be used to attract the service providers, we should be sharing the shiz out of that page, and personally get friends who can to subscribe to it. Lets see what happens with crystalweb

crystalweb are only an ISP vumatel would be the ones to contact, will try and make contact

There is also no dates for this yet. Would expect it to happen Q2 2017, and connectivity around 2018?

Also this crystalweb thing..... 40-50 people in a 5km radius.... if you go to the centre of Secunda and draw a 5km radius circle you cove the whole secunda (atleast very close to the whole secunda), so we currently have 386 signups so we are way past that mark already.... I dont trust that statement from them at all.

Yeah my problem with it as well. I can fit multiple suburbs into a 5km radius, or they probably mean 5km diameter, yet EVERY provider requires hundreds per suburb. Still can't find a signup page.
 
I'm seriously starting to wonder if I should move to a city and if I will be able to afford to commute to secunda

The thing is they themselves dont actually know what they want. Even if it is a 5KM diameter, you could split Secunda in half and still have more than 50 people in both halves..... They are all so furking clueless it makes me wonder how they got there sometimes. Our best bet is to wait and see what that Vox Telecoms wireless solution would be like. I am not a big fan of wireless, but if that is the best we are going to get until the rest are tired of competing for a saturated suburb, then I will take it. It is a shame that we have so many people in the IT business that have absolutely zero information to give when asked.

Atleast progress is being made across the country so maybe someday we will get lucky.
 
Uhm I just saw something that might be the reason why no one wants to help us with fibre.

They actually think Secunda is much much bigger than it realy is.
If you go according to this https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006 then Secunda is apparently Area: 173.71 km²
Population: 40198 (231.41 per km²),Households: 10292 (59.25 per km²), but that is just not true. That census includes places like Sasol Secunda, Holfontein, Winkelhaak Mines, Secunda SP2 (https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006021), and Secunda SP3 (https://census2011.adrianfrith.com/place/866006002) all that should not be included with Secunda. That adds up to roughly 151km² that should not be counted with us.

They think they must do so much more digging, when it is just not true. =P.

Yeah we have the same problem. Half the suburbs are open fields with 5 or 10 people and those are mostly on the edge of other populated suburbs. ISPs just don't want to do their research and want us to bend over backwards to convince them it's a good business case.

Yea it is definately a uphill battle. South Africa, the country where we expect everyone to do our jobs for us!!!
I also saw this new big white boxes up from telkom, and all the openserve bakkies makes me wonder. Will definitely have to make a turn at the shop and/or stop at one of those bakkies to find out what is going on.

Just wish the other providers would have a open line of communication, but they dont want to give any informaion about current interest and stuff like that. Also we have the website, and the could use the data from there, Hawky did a great job on the site so if we could get the providers to take a look at it I am sure he would share the required info with them. i will ask him again to just update the map with the dots again, he is always willing to help. We are getting closer and closer and one day we will win.
