Fibre setup and help choosing a new router

Hi

I currently have a 100Mbps fibre connection and Telkom is my ISP. The fibre line is connected to a Huawei optical network terminal which is then connected to the Telkom router with a ethernet cable.

Now, my first question is, is the optical network terminal necessary or can I get a router which links to the fibre line directly?

My second question, I would like to replace that freebie Telkom router with a good / proper / decent one. Which router should I go for, keeping in mind the first question and also VERY IMPORTANTLY, will it work with Telkom as an ISP?

I am prepared to spend around 3K.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

That ONT is staying, so no need to waste money on a router with a fibre port.

Or get yourself a Mikrotik routerboard and some mikrotik wireless APs/ ubiquiti unify AC.

Tenda is great value for money but only if you can get old stock of the AC1900 spec AC18 or AC15. The local distributors (Scoop) recently decided to only import the entry level routers so it's hard to find the decent ones now.

I bought one of these a few months back based on a recommendation and it has been great thus far.

I prefer something a little more modular I myself have the Edgerouter and will be adding the AC lite from Ubiquity soon. This video helped me make up my mind:

I would also go with this approach.. Best investment I have made in terms of home networking. I have ubiquiti edgerouter and 2 unifi access points.
