hope someone has an answer.
I recently changed fibre suppliers, mweb router couldnt be used because it was locked to their network. can i change this?
then got a 300mbps router that the fibre router plugs into (for wifi) but the speed fluctuates badly. So much so that there are times when no internet is possible on a 20mbps fibre line.
I've contacted the service provider, they have asked for speedtests and ping tests, which ive sent them but to no avail.
Anyone know what i can try on my end?

Are you testing with a device directly connected to the router with a cable or with a wifi device?

with a wifi device. not sure how to test directly
cable into machine I take it?

So the ISP will disregard wifi devices as a test of Internet speed.

Get a laptop and a lan cable

To determine if the problem is the wifi or the internet access.

Over wifi your speedtests will fluctuate the further you are away from it and its very noticeable on fibre for some odd reason. I have noticed this as well.
You may want to look at Ubiquiti UniFi wireless access points as a solution

Test using a lan cable plugged into the router itself, and that going into your pc or laptop (of course)

Also download an app called "Wifi Analyzer". It will help you determine where in your house/flat the wifi isn't as nice are, as well as any conflicting signals around you (like if all your neighbors use the same wifi channel, there will be a crap ton of noise)

I had the same issue, crapped on the ISP for inconsistent speeds, turned out it was my wifi signal screwing around (I had a ubiquiti unifi device, new hardware doesn't always solve your problem)

I ended up getting power-over-ethernet devices with a few wifi extensions (these: http://www.tp-link.com/us/products/details/cat-5509_TL-WPA4220KIT.html)

Never had an issue since and I even upgraded the firmware of the devices for a nice 150mbps lanspeed boost
